Hi.
I`m planing a project in my mind and I believe it should be possible to get done..
Im planing to buy a midifighter 3D to use in my sets, but I dont want to be locked to the computer.
So here`s my plan, I want to get the midifighter to become wireless somehow, how can this be done?
Im thinking I have a usb cable from it to a unit in my pocket that powers the midi controller and also sends signals to a receiver that is connected to my laptop. Im just having trouble finding equipment for this..
While I love the MIDI Fighter series, I got a 3D, Spectra, and Twister, unless you plan on finger drumming, you might be better off just getting a Numark Orbit.
They run for list than $40 at this point and give you pretty much the same functionality with mapping (minus finger drumming). It’s about the size of a PS Vita.
I’d still get a 3D one day, but instead of trying to reinvent the wheel and spending a bunch of time and money doing it (plus you’ll suffer from lag which would suck for drumming), I’d go this route.
I’m sure it can be done. But I’m equally sure that it would kill you on latency.
Depending on the wireless technology used, WiFi and Bluetooth have 150-200ms of latency PLUS whatever the OS/DJsoftware/SoundInterface add on top of that. Before you pursue this any further, set the latency of your setup to 200-250ms and see if that is “good enough” for your use. My guess is that it will not be.
Another option on the more expensive end that I didn’t think about…
QuNeo+ Rogue. I’ve got a QuNeo and it has great Traktor options similar to the 3D (though no actual motion controls, made up for with additional faders). I don’t know what the Rogue is going for these days (it was kind of expensive), but it promised super low latency and good battery power. A QuNeo can be had for cheap now as prices have dropped over time.
Speaking from experience, the Numark Orbit has 15-25 ms of latency and that operates over 2.4gHz Wifi. Bluetooth is improving in MIDI latency but still upwards to 75ms.
