Ok so I’ve been dying to go to this shit for the last few year and this year I’m making it happen.
WMC is March 15-26. Ultra is the 23-25th.
I’m planning on going 22-25th.
My question is…is Ultra worth going to? Or will I be entertainined by only going to WMC? I don’t really know how it works. 3 day Ultra passes are $300 and I’ve heard they sell out, so I want to be on top of things.
I’m almost positive I have a free place to crash, but if not I plan on getting a shitty hotel, so any suggestions would be helpful.
I know some people have had to gone so any tips, advice, is greatly appreciated.
Also…I’ve never partied in Miami. Should be a good one.
Last year I did just WMC and it was sick. Did some club nights, pool parties at the Shelborne, Beatport beach party, etc. Amazing time. This year I’m doing both. My spring break lines up perfectly and I’m staying at my brothers place that literally overlooks Ultra. Whatever you end up doing, you won’t be disappointed.
btw I see you’re in NYC. Im headed there for NYE. Thursday we don’t have plans yet, friday, we’re going to Alesso at Pacha, and Saturday were between a few things (Lavo - expensive , or maybe Webster Hall. Any recommendations? I hear good things about Cielo.
I’ll be completely honest, I’ve only been here for one NYE and it was very overrated. Stay the hell away from Times Square…total clusterfuck. I went to an apartment party there and the roads were blocked and cops everywhere…just a pain in the ass.
I’ve also heard bad things about Pacha, but I’d still check it out. I still hear they have badass shows there. My friend went to Hardwell last week and he said he killed it. Most of the complaints I hear about there are its too crowded, full of guidos/Dbags.
If you can get in Lavo I recommend it…dope venue for a show. I saw Morten Breum there last year…amazing vibe and set. Expensive as hell though. I have some friends that spin at Webster a few times a month at an event called “Bassment Saturday’s” but I doubt that will be going on on NYE.
As for clubs in general, I mostly stick to lounges, you gotta have a lot of paper and girls to have a good time in clubs here. I’ve done it in the past, but right now I’m just over it.
I’ve been to Marquee and Kiss N Fly recently…both great spots.
My main advice…have a plan. Look into a one price party type of deal. They have them all over.
Lots of good info about NYE in this article.
btw…Ohio represent! I’m from eastern, OH…went to school at OSU.
Been to Ultra once and Miami Music Week once (last year when UMF and Ultra were split). Ultra was fun, but mostly because I had a press pass. I’m not sure if I would have enjoyed it without one, but I’m not really a festival person.
I have until the 16th to decide before WMC prices go up again, but I’m probably going to WMC and ignoring Ultra unless I manage to get another Press Pass.
But is that just for the conference or do those passes get you into all the clubs and stuff for free too? Couldn’t you just go to a lot of the events without one?
We’re just going to have to pick something. Maybe we’ll try for Lavo thursday. I don’t have a whole lot to spend as from my past experience, I know that week in Miami eats cash like no other. I’m actually from Syracuse but go to School here.
I think it should, I’m really not sure how it works though. I’m just not sure you need it to go to a lot of the stuff at clubs during WMC, probably gets you in free though. Has anyone here been?
nem0nic has. But apart from selling an old computer, I haven’t seen him post in a while.
Don’t you live there? Can’t you, like, ask around or something and report back to us? I mean…I’d buy you a beer for that kind of help.
And by that, I mean I’d pour you a shot out of my flask…I don’t like paying miami prices for booze. Miami Music Week last year was the soberest year of the week for me.
ive gone a few times already and let me tell you it is awesome. Tickets were really expensive this year but I got them early on so I got them for the cheapest price. Dont know what the current price is but I know its a good amount higher than 300
I live an hour north of Miami so I’m not really immersed the scene down there, I’ll look into it. I think it’s probably like CMJ in NY where if you have a pass you can go to any of the events but if you don’t you can also buy tickets through the venue or pay at the door and get in just about anywhere. The pass might be worth it and probably gets you in quicker but I would have to find out, I hear lines during WMC get pretty crazy.
Ultra is $300 right now so I’m going to try to get some cash together and grab my ticket now since I know if I don’t I will be kicking myself later. Money is just tight with the holidays and gear whoring.
According to the WMC website, the bade gets you complimentary or reduced admission to any of the official events, plus a lot of the trade/industry-show stuff.
I’m thinking it’s probably worth it, but I don’t know.
Yeah if I lived in miami or was there for the whole time I would definitely get the badge. Realistically though I’m driving back and forth so will just try to pick out some of the major events I want to see and take a day off work for Ultra.
The first time we flew down on Thursday and then did The World of Drum and Bass afterparty, which was awesome. Then had Ultra on Friday, then Future Sound of Breaks that night. Then Saturday was Ultra, and then we did some random club which Kruder and Dorfmeister didn’t show at, and it was a shitty night.
Second time I drove down. 24 hour straight drive with some friends. We ended up going down to key west first for a few days, and just getting drunk on the beach. We then went up for the thursday night show, and then did ultra/afterparties through saturday night. It was a great week, probably one of the best of my life. Then drove back up.
I consider it as a complete investment though. You need to bring like $1000 down with you (hotel/travel/booze/drugs if you don’t bring your own) and then you’ll be okay.
If you want to pinch pennies, Miami is not the city to party in.
I will highly recommend The World of Drum and Bass and Future Sound of Breaks afterparties. I think Metalheadz throws one as well, and it’s solid too. (If you’re into the dnb/dubstep/breaks business).
All in all, it’s an experience I really enjoyed. This year I had a couple friends go and I couldn’t because of finances/time-off. They said Ultra itself was fucking packed and a half, and you couldn’t walk around easily from stage to stage, which killed a lot of the fun for them.
It’s a good experience, but take it with a grain of salt if it’s as packed as it was last year from what I hear. My buddies wanted to see some stuff on the Dubstep stage, and couldn’t get any closer than the house tent.
That’s really sad, and it’s a lot of the reason I’m probably not going to UMF unless my friends manage to convince me. I’ve only been once, but I had a press pass from DJF.
I remember my girlfriend texting me saying she was going to meet me in front of the stage in the Ibiza tent for Kaskade or somebody. So I went and got food…and walked around…shot another DJ (photo, not guns), and basically wasted 45 minutes…walked up to the artist/press entrance and waited for her in the photo pit…for like 20 minutes.
It took her an hour to wiggle/fight her way through the crowd. And 2010 was a lot smaller than 2011.
Music Week was a lot of fun this year. It actually ended up a bit cheaper because we were selective about the parties we went to and basically didn’t drink. (say what you will about wanting to party it up, but when a shot of stoli costs $17, I’m the DD whether I have the money or not)
I think WMC has a much greater chance of happening, though I’m not sure if it’ll work out. At least one of the friends I normally go with already has a UMF ticket. I guess I could just ditch him for those days and catch up with him after the festival closes.
I’m from Miami. I live like 3 blocks away from they have held they last several ULTRA events.
During WMC week, there are a lot of places (pool parties) that have no cover charge.
If you plan ahead and play it smart, you can def go to a few events and spend no money on admission. (Drinks and food are a different story.)
The events held at night in clubs are the ones that you will need to buy tickets and spend some more coin on.
Regarding ULTRA, if you have never been, it’s definitely worth going to, for one day at least. (but you will want to go the second or third too. do it if you can afford it). Expect a SHIT-LOAD of people.
