so i got this gig coming up and the customer actually mentioned country and dubstep in the same breath. then she also warned me that the last dj that they had, who sent the crowd running for the door, did too much “mash up”.

whats your craziest or favorite wack promoter/venue owner story?
I say bring a lot of different stuff and feel it out. If country works and your ok with playing that then go for it. If you can really have that huge of a gap in genres I say play it up that’s a lot a flexability that most DJs don’t usually get.
I can’t tell you how many times a night I get asked for Reggae/Rap/Country. I love to play some rap and even some reggae from time to time but the owner hates it all. I’ve tried to mix it up before and throw in some hip hop but the owner told me never to play that shit again. It’s his joint and he’s paying me so I don’t.
i’d really like to find out what DJs these people have been listening to that makes them think it would be a good idea to mix those genres together
the most mind boggling thing i’ve ever heard from any event organizer was asking for a 2 hour slot, all equipment provided by me (sound, gear, lights, etc), THE NEXT DAY, for $150. needless to say, i laughed.
I’ve got a few horrible promoter stories from doing shows many years ago, but club owners are something I’ve changed my view on. I’ve come to realize that owners of bars just understand what they want except for a good night numbers wise from the bar. Generally, they don’t give a shit if you play polka-trance covers by Mike Tyson all night, so long as the twats keep buying drinks till last call.

yea… I try to avoid playing in joints owned by assholes with those kind of attitudes… but I don’t rely on DJing to put food on the table so its easier for me to tell 'em to fuck off.
