Eighteenth birthday, 1997. Shit belt drives and terrible mixer, freshly unpacked. Trying to mix the 2 Bad Mice Bombscare remixes record and T99 - Anastasia. No YouTube tutorials, no forums, no DJ friends. Look at me now!
A round of applause ![]()

Great day, big mistake in the beginning, but just winning after that.
Literally spent all day attempting to mix the same 2 records together over and over again then rinsed and repeated for a week until I got it locked tight, as has been said no tutorials or forums, no waveforms or a laptop in sight, I don’t even think USB ports had been invented yet. Glad I learnt on belt drives as you were constantly correcting throughout a mix. I also spent time to work out the equipment I had, all the connections and what all the knobs buttons and faders did, it was a much simpler time back then, buy records play records, no mapping, gig prep, beatgridding or fx … happy days!
You’re first day will be the worst. Massive disappointment. You always assumed you’d be a natural - but you’re not.
But guess what - no-one is. DJ’ing demands a LOT of hard work, over a lot of time. It’s easier now than it’s ever been, though.
ill let you know in a few months, secured my first real club gig in 2 months…very excited and allready nervous..lol
Disagreed.
Okay.
The guys who startoff with software and sync will not experience what it feels like hearing a mess of unsynced beats on your headphone and you have no idea how in the world you can hear which track is going faster and in wich direction you should slide the pitchfader. And when you try to change the tempo the mess of beats gets even worse. However, those software guys skip a training that teaches you to listen to tracks accurately.
Won’t take long to be the reality of 100% of the new DJs. Not good nor bad, just the humanity changing like it always did.
just like all modern painters use a laptop and digi brush…oh wait…
Most modern images are made with a laptop and a digi brush.
So, won’t take long to be the reality of 100% of the new images. Not good nor bad, just the humanity changing like it always did.
NO THEY ARE NOT!
dude…I know a ton of art teachers and artists. One, ONE, of them uses new technology.
oh man. small bar in wicker park, 10 years ago. going well and train wreck. Luckily no one was in the bar to even notice! Ah the joys of being a nobody.
i got cut off 15 mins into my set.
I’m not saying painters don’t use paint, I’m saying 99% the images created by the human kind, nowadays, are digital.
I’m being realistic and looking at the big picture, that’s it.
Played on a beach for a small “festival” type thing. People kite surfing and ripping around on quads. Then i realized i had electricity flowing through me as everytime the metal on my headphones touched me it felt like a bee sting. Also had tingly thumbs. Was an interesting experience.
I did not bring any country to a wedding. Some drunk Indian jump-kicked my behringer speaker off the top of my subwoofer.
Solidarity brother, I had almost excatly the same experience.
Software guys, I implore you to switch off sync and close the laptop lid and give it a try. You learn so much from saving a mix that sounds like a pair of trainers in a tumble dryer.
