"you're a thief of music......."

“you’re a thief of music…”

“you’re a theif of music…you’re a record player…player..”

saw in another forum, thought I’d post it here…let the flame war begin…

after watching this… I feel :stuck_out_tongue: at the same time :rage: …then i feel like…'ah whatever..

..

I like Henry Rollins, but that was just plain mean spirited. Following his logic, he may as well be shouting without using a microphone.

It seems to me that there are those like Rollins who prefer to stay rooted in the past—paralyzed by a lack of curiosity and a fear of the new age of technology in which we currently find ourselves.

Message to monsieur Rollins: Criticize as much as you can, but resistance is futile. Spend your energy doing what you feel comfortable doing and allow others to have a go at what makes them happy without trying to rain on their parade. Live and let live.

Sincerely,
a proud “thief” of music (and video)

Ah well… The point he’s making is more about the commercial shitty non from the heart kinda music. He is also breaking it down for nowadays rockbands.

So, if it still bothers you, you might want to check out this vid, and see that he can be a vulnerable person too.

I’m on the left politically, know Rollins pretty well and agree with much of his views. I just find it hard to judge “commercial shitty non from the heart kinda music” — some like it and some don’t. It’s all very subjective. When it comes to non quantitative genres like music and art, it’s best to keep a super open mind because what you consider fantastic could be “shitty” to someone else.

Rock and Hip Hop were and still are considered crappy music by a good majority of the population. It’s my sincere belief that artists - and I place DJs in that fold - should remain as open minded as possible.

My shiny 2 cents.

i just imagined henry rollins comming into my bedroom and punching me in the face for wanting to remix “six pack” by black flag.
that or liar by rollins band.

also henry rollins should have been venom is the last spiderman, just sayin’

is this guy making music or making money? big difference

its thief.. not theif..

True that. Even though he is known to heckle anything that is not pure rock, he has made a killer track with Goldie for the Spawn OST.

Listen to it here.

So he isn’t completely hating electronic music.

Yeah but he was making fun of trance and stuff, not drum and bass music lol
We all know drum and bass is the best form of electronic music and is exempt from the things he says about drum and bass music :stuck_out_tongue:

Ghehehehe… Once again… here’s goldie for ya.

But to get back on topic, he’s talking about the heartless/emotionless music, not all electronic music.

I can feel your love for progressive trance beaming out of you :stuck_out_tongue:

This guy made me laugh, i’m not the least bit offended, everything he says isn’t true but hey its comedy.

I can imagine his anger though.

Some acts are just too simple… If we only had an ‘erase’ functiona for these kinda acts… Just erase them from existing.

According to him, live music is the only kind of music to be played anywhere?

it’s so hard to play powerchords…

Could someone please point me to the heartless/emotionless section on beatport?

@aiden
if you look closely…

Punk rock Henry Rollins says nothing new.
Basically it’s the same thing a million other ppl say that do not understand electronic music, it’s tools, or it’s ppl.
I too used to be hardcore mohawk punk rocker back in the day, I just evolved.
Henry is still living in '82.

Well, keep in mind he’s not just mocking electronic music. The whole last half of that rant is about modern rock.

I think the issue, in the end, is that a lot of DJs take themselves very seriously, and aren’t actually doing anything that requires a whole lot of talent. I mean, I love DJing, but I recognize that I’m just going into a booth and playing other people’s music.

Yeah there’s a lotta work, and there are many DJs who have more talent than a lot of musicians, but at the same time, do a lot of those DJs justify their ego’s?

I definitely agree with you there Dvls,

Music controls peoples emotions to some extent, and as a DJ you get that control without necessarily having the same level of aptitude as a traditional act.

But through the popularization of dance music DJs have reached that same level of reverence. And sadly I think that is what drives a reasonable percentage of DJ’s.

All of us have met the kinda DJ who after you congratulate them on the performance stands smugly with the slightest eye contact as acknowledgment.

I think when he says “commercial shitty non from the heart kinda music” he means music that is generally made just to make $$$. Music that is made for the wrong reasons.

I think he’s honestly exaggerating for the laughs  Hell, I thought it was funny too.

I’m sure if I sat him down and explained why I like DJ’ing he’d understand.

IMO a DJ is someone who appreciates music but is not a musician. However, that line is being blurred in many cases these days, which is great!

all in all, henry rollins is a very funny dude
