If you spin hip hop or house music you can walk into a sushi restaurant and get a decent paying gig. Minimal isn't so easy.

Not that you can't do it. And not that you shouldn't try. You should try cause it's the only way you're going to know. But if you're already walking in with a mindset that you deserve it, or you're awesome, or you can change the scene, you're most likely going to be let down. And I'm putting this a LOT nicer than it has been put to me.

But believe me, if you think 3 sets of different sub-genres of minimal and a can-do attitude is gonna do it, you may be sorely disappointed.

And with headphones, personally, I think all DJ headphones with that design are shit. I've seen them fall apart on DJs heads, and they've fallen apart on mine. Granted, I am a much more aggressive DJ than most, so they may work fine for you. But if you're gonna spend that much I'd try out the Sennheiser HD25-II's. They don't look like DJ headphones but they sound amazing.
    are these it - http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-...sr=8-2-catcorr

can you fold one of the cups tho. or its just closed.

well i'm not worried about it. cause i will have a main job based on a bachelor degree. but shit if no one will take me for my music anywhere because its minimal then i can always work on tech, prog, tribal sets and etc. so i mean its w/e. if i don't get accepted anywhere. well in 10yrs from when i receive my shit i'd know that i'm just as good as any professional. and i can stay updated with watching their 1hr videos and learning possibly new techniques. as long as i have my degree and my career job to make a living off, thats all i care about. if i can spin my minimal at club-a , club-b, club-c in the future then i'd be happy too. after 3-4yrs when i'm done making all my sets and put vids up on a website, i'll link them to lots of clubs who play house / minimal and whoever likes what they hear then so be it. now theres 208 clubs that accepts house music and 86 that accepts minimal/tech. if none of them like my shit then i won't stress about it. the most important thing to me out of all of this, is that i will only spin what i like and not what someone else requires me to. and as long as i dj at home whenever, i'd be happy to know that i achieved a very high level. taking this hobby to the extreme in my point of view, caring little to none what clubs think about my sets or how awful they are. it won't stop me from making sets at home and feeling good. what i'm trying to say is. i don't care if no club accepts me. the only thing that matters is that i like what i spin and i'm far by happy with that than killing myself or bargaining with a club about my set or what i should spin.

scramble eggs there idk if some of it makes sense. but damn i put my soul into that post, and shit i'm not even high. see now that felt good. lets put some minimal on.

    ----edit
you brought the happyness out of me simply because i just expressed myself that i'm going on beatport to listen to some tracks i got in the Hold Bin and purchase one.

Yeah those are them. Make sure they have the gold plated plug and the screw on connector. Makes all the difference.

You have a good mindset, I was just getting concerned with the way you were phrasing it. You rock out with your bad self, man, and that's all that'll matter.

a few tips for the OP:

    1. Do research on different controllers, their features/pros/cons. I don't mean to sound rude, but unless you're doing some very advanced mixing, the Xone will just be a waste of money, because you won't be using it to it's full extent. Like the previous users said - Traktor (or some other DJ program) + midi controller + an audio interface will be significantly cheaper than just that one Xone or other fancy mixers. It should be enough for a genre like minimal.
I admit that I'm all about the simpler setups, and there could be some amazing mixers out there, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

    2. Build up an ASSLOAD of a collection and KEEP building it. From what you've said, it sounds like you don't have that many tracks yet. I don't know much about minimal, and I don't know how saturated NYC is with minimal DJs, but you obviously don't want to be playing the exact same stuff other DJs are playing. Go out of your way to find more underground tracks and artists, because spinning just the flavor of the week tracks - gets old. I'm personally of the opinion that electronic music doesn't have a very long shelf life.

    3. Keeping your music organized in subgenre folders is nice and all, but don't separate them as sets. DJing is very much about mixing what sounds good together - even if it's different genres. Sometimes it just makes sense. Also keeping your sets spontaneous is very important. The main way to be good at that is to KNOW. YOUR. TRACKS.

    4. Be humble. Even though I'm writing this "know it all" crap, I'm not very far ahead of you in terms of being a professional DJ, and I'm very much aware of how far I've got to go.
Even after a few years, when you get good enough to play for people - it's doubtful that you'll get a paying DJing gig right away. Which is why you're gonna duke it out at Bar Mitzvas and fratboy parties, who likely won't really appreciate what you're playing - until you win their hearts.

Last advice - be more open to other genres. I understand that you want to cater to a niche underground crowd, but paying attention to everything between the underground and the top 40 helps too. Unless you're playing intense breakcore, I doubt that sneaking in a remix of a pop song will destroy all your street cred.

P.S. Use apostrophes and capital letters when writing. Your English teacher should have taught you better than that. =)

i dont even know why i'm having these types of conversations on here for, i dont even own 1 dj equipment and i'm talking like if i'm ready to get out there after mastering what i have. LMAO. wow that just made me laugh. well dood to be honest when i get my equipment and all i'm going to keep the subgenre's and i will make those as "sets" every song i d/l of beatport has a family. its my job to figure out what family does that song belong in and put it in there. i'm not into top40....simply because im not interested in it and you have to stay on top of things and releases and so forth. i learned from "dj spinning 101" that you only spin music you like. aside from spinning minimal house. i will invest time in tribal house, tech house, prog house, latin house etc etc.

i have more to say but prefer not to just cause i'm not even far into making this an offical 2nd job. lol

yes i'm not getting the xone-dx. i decided not to go digital (software, laptop etc)

blah blah. i will start w/ a vci100se + audio 2 dj. then save money for equipment that really interests me.

lol. hrm i dont think cutflow sounds like a good dj name to have or is it. lol. my dj handle name is going to be my first name "arty" and then i still don't know what to put after that. its definitely not my last name but "arty style" but then i heard of a "joey style" so that kinda ruins that...... my name will definitely not have the two-letter "dj" in it. i wan't to be recognized as "arty ___" not "dj arty ___"

well i won't be posting much. prob cuz i dont have any much of experience yet which is prob i got nothing to rly say plus i have no equipment
