I second Jo3 for the Firewire wish, BTW!
Firewire has higher bandwidth (especially the 800) and is much easier on the CPU. Unlike the USB, FW has DMA (Direct Memory Access) which is much more optimal for the purpose. In practice, this means higher bit rates, lower latency, more concurrent channels, MINIMAL risk of pops and crackles.
As per the usage of FW vs USB - unfortunately the low-cost laptops don't have this port so there will be some pissed-off potential (and existing too) customers. Just for the sake of no trolling and hating, I do understand (and accept) why NI and the other major companies have switched to USB-only recently. I could easily imagine how I'm trying to educate people why the FW is a better solution over USB ... over and over again ...
bottom line: as good as it is ...
Doh... misread the post.
Yeah i used to use a Presonus Firebox which was great as it left both my usb ports free and it was super fast. Also had Midi i/o
I personally dont think anyone will make firewire soundcards anymore. what with apple dropping it of mbs and usb 3.
I doubt NI will ever touch FW.
It just seems strange that the "industry standard" (if there is one) Traktor set up is a MBP (which mosty have 2 USB slots), a 92 with 2 two X1's and an NI Sound card which adds up to three USB's. Surely NI must be thinking a firewire 800 card will be more adequate especially if it can use USB as well (to satisfy everyone). I dunno I just think it makes sense. It will probably bump up the cost massively I suppose.
MBPro - UC-33e - Audio 10 - TSP2 - Xone 22 - 1210's - Mackie MR5's
I thought the standard was Traktor, Audio 8, an X1, a xone 92 and 2 CDJ 1000/2000s
the standard is about to become S4 & Maschine
as simple as that LOL
I guess cost is the deciding factor.
I totally agree with what you say though, it seems like a blind acceptance that the choke of 2 USB ports is one that we should suffer.
Just make something that deals with the issue and people will buy it.
Personally i wont be getting one of these new cards cus i dont need one but despite not needing one i would buy one if it had FW and/or dual USB for mulitple midi controllers.
Im sure its not that easy to implement but...
