Look, you want street cred and respect in the booth by other djs, promoters & club owners. Learn to play on DVS (Serato or Traktor based on location). It was a fighting battle for me to get respect with the VCI-100 and I rock that sucker for 4 or 5 years until it got retired at DJTT HQ.

My point is midi controllers are cool and save a ton of cash when you cant get a decent pair of cdjs or 1200's and a industry standard DJM series mixer. But when you try to come into the club scene, you got to give respect to get respect. RESPECT THE DJ BOOTH. Dont come in demanding to have a 12x12 table elevated to 5.5". Or set you midi controller over 1200's as if it was a paper weight.

In a nutshell, DVS w/a Midifigher or Dicers and kill it!

For the record, especially with the waveforms in Serato it's quite easy to beatmatch anyway as long as you know how to to begin with. Getting a handle for actually moving vinyl won't take long either. If you learn how to beatmatch on the S4 and then spend maybe an hour playing around on a serato setup, you can and will be able to do a demo using their setup. No need to buy anything new, IMO, especially if they let you tool around on the setup for a bit. If you don't own Serato, you won't have cue points etc. set up necessarily, but I'd assume you can do a decent mix without cue points set up anyway. My 2c based on my experience with the S4, a Tech 1200, and an SL3.

Its always good to know how to use most gear so that it doesn't effect you getting a gig or not...whether they use cdjs,1200s, or midi....if you learn to use all of them you won't have issues...

You will respect the dj booth bc you won't be taking over and making demands....and once you are in and they like ur mix....then you can bring your mfighter or midi controller and kill it

Um every signal major club wants you to use their equipment. Especially if you aren't a well known name. Bringing in a VCI-100 looks like a toy. Sorry but the majority of places in the US don't want you to hook up crap to their systems. They want a reputation of legit Djs. And people recognize 1200s and cdjs as legit. Plain and simple. You can argue blue in the face that controllers deserve a spot but aside from dive bars, or small lounges, a legit major club doesn't want that.

your right man. its all about looks, tradition, and respect to the trade.

Now when Ean's name was brought up, keep in mind he was a vinyl dj...some call it paying dues, which he did, plus the man is a headliner, not a opener.

I still mail my $5 money order every month to "Paying Dues".

I've gotten gigs because I had a small setup. It was a terrible gig though, $50 one night and $0 the next night. (Percentage of drink sales)

DJ's need to be able to play music regardless of the equipment. I find it amazing that I can let someone use my computer, music and equipment, and they sound completely different. I can jump on someone's equipment, mid-set, with the same playlist they were working with, and take the floor in a different direction. It's not about what you use, it's that intangible DJ skill of putting new emotion and style into pre-recorded music.
