I can, but i like to turn the booth off to rest my ears when i can.
Im also a constant fiddler. Depends on the kind of track on how much booth i want in my ear. A more subtle track might require less booth in my ear which i would rather alter than change the volume in my headphones.
Like i say, theres no one-level-fits-all for me. Im always fiddling. Just me.

    Weird.

Why did you choose the S4 if it's that much of an issue?

Cus i didnt know the booth wasnt present when they sent me a pre-production model to beta test.
It was the first comment i made... "wheres the booth".

I would still use it over any other controller though as i use Traktor and the jog wheels are head and shoulders above any that ive tried and i have tried them all.

In my experience, that is not the case at even a single club worth going to.
Well I beg to differ, the bigger the system, the bigger the monitor and the more drastic the volume increase, when I was in sound hire we'd normally allow 10-15% of the PA wattage for DJ monitors.

As an example I used to be resident in a club with 25kw of Turbosound, we had 1.5kw of (highly efficient) turbo 15' monitors in the DJ box... when the system was cranked way up it was quite apparent to anyone in proximity (most of the balcony and stage area) if they were being turned on and off.

Same goes for many club systems i've played on and heard that had decent monitoring, the mid's and highs from the monitors cut through the club system unless they are completely facing a back wall which has a baffle.

Not saying I don't understand the need on occasion to twist the booth knob if you need to take to the next/previous jock, order drinks etc... just not something I'd do very frequently.

No need to differ, as I said it was merely in my experience... I'm on the other side of the world, so there could very easily be drastic differences due to local codes, regional differences, etc.

I thought we were talking about the dancefloor, as you stated earlier, so in this case, I can more that understand that.

Again, every single decent club I've gone to (in my experience) never had monitors facing the main floor. They were either flanking the DJ, facing them, and at a 90 degree angle from the dance area, or as you said, facing a back wall with sound dampening. Most good clubs have booths designed to isolate sound from the main floor, and the booths sound from interfering with each other.

    +1

If someone needs this explained to them, the last thing they should be thinking about is playing out.

There's a lot of posturing and "best-case scenarios" in that article, especially at the end when he asks whether you should look for a controller with a booth output or not and he says a flat out "no". He makes a lot of other assumptions too, which is bad, because someone who finds this article useful clearly needs some unbiased and guidance.

Because if booth is controlled by the venue's mixer, then i guess you have to do a step or two if you want to adjust the volume
    lazyness ftw
What about if your phones or the preamp isn't loud enough to hear over the speakers and you can't walk away far enough to lower the volume?

Also, walking away is counter productive to beatmatching if that's what you're doing.

That's as discriminating as any discriminating comment.

I'm a mobile DJ that got my roots spinning vinyl in the club scene.

These days I can't see why I would go back to the clubs. I would have to take far less pay, and most likely commit to every Saturday instead of picking and choosing.

I do however love it when people come up to me and say "You've exceeded every expectation I've had of a wedding DJ". You might say "that's not too hard" and I might agree to a certain degree, but I say it's because I got my roots in the club industry.
