There are some f*cking terrible opening DJs (shit lets just say terrible DJs) out there, and it's getting worse and worse. I pretty much know these days if I set foot in a club playing Electro/House etc. the early DJs are going to be shit and have no idea how to play before midnight, and surprise surprise they all seem to be under 20 and using a controller.

The amount of internationals complaining about bad opening DJs on social media seems to be increasing massively too. Recently it was someone (I forget who) on twitter complaining about the opening DJ playing stuff from their label... and recently in my city I saw a DJ open for Sebastian Leger and pretty much spend the hour playing the Beatport Top 10 from that week.

I find the techno/tech house scene seems to have a lot better grasp on it, at least in Australia.

Festivals are a different beast altogether to be honest, can't really compare it to a club programming wise

so lets say i have an opening slot. is it okay to play bangers straight from the front? while avoiding the ones that the later djs will most likely play and beatport top 10

If you really have to ask, should you be playing a festival gig in the first place?

Depending on the gig and venue, yeah, it is.

But if you're not having fun playing that style then step down, give it to some one else who does, and focus on finding gigs that you do have fun playing.

Well yeah thats generally how you get paid, the owner gets paid, the staff gets paid, the rent gets paid.....

Without that the whole industry dies. So yeah it is important.

A good opening set does not equal boring and not fun. Seriously how long have some of you guys been in this scene....

+1. No bangers obviously means it's boring and not fun apparently. So much for building an appreciation for the music. That used to be one of the first prerequisites for being a DJ.

Probably all of them started at clubs and bars.
