i think becoming a good dj is just being able to mix fairly smoothly between songs using basic a and b mixing. getting to this level of skill isn't something thats too difficult.

a great dj in my opinion is someone who has unique and meaningful track selection, has a great ear for blends/mash ups, and has great live technical skills (scratching, controllerism, etc.)

check out guys like a-trak and carl cox on youtube for some excellent djing

Of course you can find some pictures of said artists in a booth, they are after all DJs but GREAT DJs ehhh.. not so much. Its like someone saying "What separates a good rock artist from a great rock artist? Do all the great rock artist (Nickleback, Creed, Chevelle, etc.) write all their own lyrics and music?" I've been in the electronic scene for a while. Think about it I'm not trying to be a troll, just kind of fed up with the miscommunication to new comers about what artists are great. For example Skrillex cant even truly be considered a Dubstep artist, theres too many damn vocals & shit. Allow me to spell it out Dub....Step. I mean to each his own, I am just following true form to what makes a great artist or DJ. I mean good for Skrillex, Guetta, Aoki, etc. to make a whole bunch of money and do their thing. The Backstreet Boys also had a lot of 8-16 year old female fans and made a ton of money, does that mean they're a great band or even a band at all. IMO no. Thats my point.
if they can entertain a crowd who cares about their skills? and if it´s the backstreet boys playing a prerecorded set...

and also since when are vocals in dubstep forbidden?

as far as i know a dj is a person considered to be playing someone eleses or their own music to a crowd. so both of them are qualified to call themself djs...

"Great DJ" is a completely subjective. You might say Guetta is TEH BEST DJ EVAR!!! I might disagree. Who cares?

The top name DJ's that play to huge crowds aren't typically the most skilled live DJ's, they're producers. So pre-recorded material is rather common - why risk screwing up if the audience doesn't know the difference?

They're not forbidden, but last time I checked Dub meant at the very least mostly instrumental. Skrillex doesn't fall into that category.
