I remember being able to buy and feeling like I should my first copy of photoshop as I was making the money off it. Student discount prices are reasonable on Adobe products, probably about what it should cost for everyone.

There is a lot more to making a flyer than the tools, like you can give me a hammer but i'm not a carpenter. You are going to have understand how many pixel per inches to make it, what kind of bleed to run, what print method you want to use, whether it be some kind of photocopy or off set print. 100-200 hours doesn't really get it, there is much so much learn about designing to do a poor job, that by the time you get to doing a great job three years has passed and all can you do is chuckle at the crap you was throwing down.

All that said, don't let it stop you, just know it is a long hill to climb.

I have probly spent around 400 hours in gimp and I would class myself an amature. I use alot of brushes (royalty free ones) that really helps. I have probly watches over 200 tutorials on it. if some asked me to touch up a photo I wouldnt have a clue lol

that being said if he has not got the money and wants to get a club night going he can make somthing that is passable

400 hours? WOW id like to just make my own flyers for like underground partys like the cardboard feeling flyers really thick and slippery feel to them, you can bend them like cardboard. Not just a piece of paper with a party invite, like some sweet graphics with the dj's name on them and everyone performing.

Last year when I was in a band I spotted a flyer in a kebab place for a club night. It was a still of Spock at the ships controls, but a pair of decks were photoshopped over the controls. It was super well done and inspired me to make up some flyers for my gigs. Got GIMP 2 a week later and launched right into it. If your just starting out you will be disappointed if something cool motivated you in the first place, because as was mentioned, 200 hours doesn't quite make you the master, far from it.

That being said, you can still do something very tasteful if you are aware of your limits, and remember that tutorials will show you something, but it might not be what you had envisioned in the first place. Best of luck man, really wanna check it out when you're done!

For the safety of your ego, don't refer to the Graphic Design industry as "being able to create my own flyers". If you are after job security and/or a good paycheck, look elsewhere. While it's a great job, everything within the creative field that has been touched by the digital age in the past couple of decades (photography, design, music) has taken a severe hit pay-wise due to the technology making the ability to pick up these skills so easy. All that said, if you tell a designer you want to learn the trade of making flyers, they might chuckle at you. It's called graphic design.
