We are on-topic. This is the sort of FUD I was discussing before.

You say it couldn't run Photoshop, Torq, Ableton, etc on it and it was above spec. Why wouldn't they run then? Because that's really not normal. That's like 'take it back and demand a refund' not normal, and you shouldn't really be posting about generic PC problems using that as an example because it's so incredibly unusual.

As for the FUD about updates, I only update Traktor when NI release new versions, and nothing else really. Exactly the same as a Mac user (except that Windows has new OS versions less often, so less to update). What were all these things that people claim they had to keep updating?

So many vague and fuzzy posts, so little actual fact and detail. Nothing but FUD.

    I think there's 3 advantages with Macs: -

    1. Apple don't build a cheap version. While that's not strictly an advantage because you can buy Windows-based laptops that have excellent build quality (at a higher price than your cheap Dell and Acer machines of course), it means there's less chance of buyer's remorse. A lot of people switch to a Mac from a laptop that was much cheaper than their Mac, so of course you would expect it to be better, just like if you bought a nice high end Ultrabook over a $400 Dell.

    2. There's less variance in hardware with Macs, which makes software testing easier.

    3. The way OS X handles audio applications is different than in Windows. You won't get issues with DPC latency on a Mac running OS X, for instance. For DJs and people into music production, I think this is the best argument for buying a Mac over a Windows-based PC, even though it does not mean that all Windows-based PCs are no good for DJing/production.

Also, if you look at the price of high end Ultrabooks, they're no cheaper than Macs really. But there are many people running Serato or Traktor just fine on Windows-based PCs that cost half the price of a Macbook or Ultrabook, so you certainly don't have to spend $1,000+ on a machine. Also - and this is hard for some Apple users to believe - there are actually people that have used both and prefer Windows to OS X. Serato was absolutely rock solid for me on Windows - no crashes, no glitches - it was perfect. I've had one or two issues with Traktor, but they are issues with the Traktor software, not issues caused by me running it on Windows.

But buying an Apple product seems to turn a lot of people into dodgy salesmen who want you to buy X instead of Y and when you ask why, they say "ooooh, if you buy Y you're gonna have all kinds of trouble!", followed by a list of exaggerations. Macbooks are great laptops and I would definitely agree that there is a lower risk in running into issues if you buy one, but that does not mean that the risk of running into issues on a Windows machine is so high that you should rule one out. I'm not an idiot - I wouldn't stick with an OS that caused me problems if there's another one I could use that works perfectly, lol.

    Excellent post Sigma.

No PC user in this thread is saying 'don't buy a Mac', they're clearly great machines (well, they should be for the price), what people are saying is 'you don't need to buy a Mac'. Don't be conned by the hyperbole and FUD put about by some of the more 'enthusiastic' Mac owners. Shop wisely and you can save yourself a huge amount of money and get something that'll be functionally identical for your purposes.

Nice post Sigma, Jack i'm going to ignore your last post, i have seen it but just going to reply something else. But in a nutshell, yes i'm a Mac user, yes i have moved over from Windows, but i have never said i don't like Windows. Certain things irritate me about it, but i also mentioned certain things irritate me about Mac (uninstalling and installing for example). I will always advise people if they don't mind about money to buy Mac but if they can't i'll always tell them to go Windows (especially if they know their stuff).

I had problems with my old laptop but i have also had problems with Mac, they were just easier to resolve. I have friends that DJ using Windows and they are half the price of my Macbook Pro but run a shit load smoother. It's all a preference, i had dislikes and likes on both platforms

Jack, you are the one making this a PC vs Mac argument again.

The OP wanted opinions...and that is what he is getting.
What makes your opinion better that anyone elses? How will someone that looks through this thread, know that YOUR opinion is the best and closest to fact?

This is a forum, where people may speak their minds and ask questions. Whether they are right or wrong, is not the point.
Discussion is the point. If you feel someones post is wrong, correct them by all means....but your tone kinda makes me not even want to join in any further.

It has been said before and I will mention it again, its this sort of thing that turns people off...from joining in.

Should I have just kept my opinion to myself?

You say that its acolytes singing Mac Fanboy songs, but I did not pick that up here. I purely saw people telling of their experiences.
No one was bashing PC's. They were giving their opinion as to why they love their Macs. There were posts of how Windows has been nothing but great for others. Let the discussion go on bro...why try and shut everyone up with your self believed tech superiority? Add your piece and let the rest do the same. You don't HAVE to compete in every argument you come across.

    I don't get it man...

Nobody said you didn't like Windows, it was your conflation of uniquely weird problems on your cheapy Acer into Reasons You Should Buy Mac that I took issue with, basically what Sigma said in his last paragraph.

To be honest i don't find my 'conflation of uniquely weird problems' weird at all, I had general problems, wanted to upgrade anyways, made sense for me to move to Mac so i did. The laptop was an Advent, did great for 3 years and wasn't a 'cheapy' it was a decent spec, just didn't do what i wanted it to do well enough. You seem to be a bit of a argumentative c*nt and seem to have destroyed a decent thread.

Woah with the insults there cowboy.

A couple of things - Ableton, Traktor, Photoshop, etc not running IS a uniquely weird problem. Fact.

Secondly Advent is a budget, or cheapy make, they are rebadged no-name laptops sold in PC World. You've gone from stating that they didn't run at all to that it didn't do what you wanted it to well enough and you were due for an upgrade. If you'd said that to start with no one would have challenged what you said.

I hardly think that challenging the lazy and inaccurate assertions you've made constitutes 'destroying a decent thread'.

Show me where I've slated Macs on this thread, please. Any quote, help yourself.

You can't because I haven't. Now, if I was to quote all the disinformation put out there by the Mac owners that would be quite a post. Surely you must see that you don't have to put Windows down to say how happy you are with your Mac?

I decided to sell it because it was kind of big and I thought I'd be better off with something smaller... But I immediately regretted selling it lol. The moment I see another used one for a good deal, I'll be picking it up. Build quality is superb, it looked uber-professional, and the screen was the best I've used so far. The Quadro card in it is a very nice plus as well.
