Many photons have died to bring you this information.
It really depends on what you mean by "pre-programmed". I agree that the tracks were prepared when imported into Traktor (beatgrid, cuepoints&loops) but that is just the way it should be done IMO. The set was not pre-programmed in sense of selecting what tracks to play. We had list of songs that we had selected for our last gig ( ~130-150 + some new tracks) and we just played what ever we felt like was fitting in. This is our way of playing nowadays...
And what comes to the turntables - it really depends what we are / I'm playing. Some cases I use turntables for sure but then some sets are more based on beatgrids & sync.
i got an allen & heath xone 22 (2channels) and i want to expand to 4 channels with the xone 42 (i am hunting on ebay right now hah)
my plan is to control samples and play back2back with friends easy![]()
xone 62 here
2 chaneels for deck a and b
2 channels for sample decks c and d
1 preview channel
1 channel for kaoss pad for fx send return but mostly use the synth built into it for a bit of continuity between tracks
yes I use them all n love it. was originally looking for a xone 42 but had this come up and love it. when a mate come's round also really easy to dedicate a channel or 2 for him.
It's not the gear. It's how you use it.
limitations are the source of creativity.
If you don't practice you don't want it.

This was a brilliant article. Very true for most people.
I love watching him dj. He's a master.

I use 3 channels all the time looping and layering and the fourth channel is for recording my brilliantness.
I'm in a relevant situation. I have just recently gotten back into DJ'ing after many years and so I have jumped from vinyl (skipping CDJs altogether) to MIDI controllers. As such, I have wondered whether I need a 4-channel mixer at all since I can mix internally in Traktor. I use Decks A&B for tracks and Deck C for samples sometimes...but the sample interface is a little cumbersome...the forthcoming Remix decks might suit me better though. At any rate...that is limited to Deck C...Deck D is essentially empty.
If I use all internal mixing I only need a soundcard with 2 Stereo outs one for the main mix and one for headphone cueing. So I don't really need a 4-channel mixer at all. I barely need a 2-Channel mixer as my output from my laptop is already the main mix.
I think more then 2 or 3 decks is mainly only useful for when you've got two tracks playing and it would be too hardto cue the next track with the current tracks. I use 2 channels with serato and that's the main reason I use the sp6, get two tracks matched and then dump it to the sp6 freeing up a deck to find where I want cue that track
Usually 2 but often 3 and the 4th. I have my iPad or iPhone hooked up on in case something happens to my computer.

I use mine as a 'house' mixer of sorts (because it doesn't leave my house). 1/2 for CDJ's, and 3/4 for 2 Traktor decks with an X1 for internal effects control. Since each channel strip on the Zero4 can be setup as Audio/Midi, I've mapped the Midi side to certain functions that I like to utilize within Traktor. I also run my : DX into channel 4 so I don't have to cable switch into the monitors.
