    Default KRK Rokit

Ok guys I finally convinced the wife to let me blow some money on speakers and I've pretty much set myself on the KRK Rokit series. Only thing is should I go for the 5's or 6's. I'm not going for the 8's they would be too much for my small apartment. Thanks for the advice guys.

I have alot of experience with these guys as I was manager and sales leader at a Guitar Center here for over 7 years.

I would recommend the 5's. While the 6's do provide a bit more low end (bass) the driver is not very efficient so it ends up being very flubby. The 5's have a much tighter low end. Also the 5's will surely be better suited for an apartment.

Another tip to help with use in an apartment. If you have a little extra $, pick up a dual 15 band EQ (such as a DBX 215) and put it before the monitors, using the booth output from your mixer. This EQ and some others have a lowcut switch that you can engage when you want to turn it up a bit without the worry of bass boomin to your neighbors. You can also tailor the sound a bit to your liking. Give the EQ a little boost around 5k and it will sound a good bit louder without actually being that loud. By using it on the monitors only, it will not change any recorded signals, and when it is not necessary, you can hit a switch to defeat any EQing. I live in a house, but this has helped keep me
    happily married for many years.

Well I couldn't wait and ended up ordering the 6's was only an extra hundred bucks which isn't too bad I can always return em and get the 5's if it's too much or I could just keep everything lower :P but who wants to do that. I will definately take into account the eq suggestion thou that I am ordering right now.

Ok so my New KRK's should be here any day now I have another question I'm pretty new to hooking everything up in a DJ setup and I know the KRK's have 2 different inputs. XLR and TRS. I know that one is balanced and one is unbalanced. I don't know what these mean thou. I will be hooking these up thru a Numark DJ/IO which has TSR so I am assuming I have to use that unless I buy a mixer soon. My question is this, is one better than the other? If I do end up using a TSR I should just get 2 seperate RCA cables to go from Left and Right outputs of channel 1 i'm assuming I know this is all very basic stuff that most DJs should know but I'm still very new to all this.

    @bartboy

I direct your attention to these two home page articles:

Cable Pizza & Knowing your Connections
These will give you some background.

You DJI/O has RCA not TRS (TRS is your headphone connection) but you are right in that it is unbalanced. Your speakers have all three connections: XLR; TRS; and RCA. Connecting your sound card to the Rokits is really easy, just get an appropriate length RCA cable. Keep it as short as possible and routed away from strong power signals like heaters, air conditioners and fog machines.

Let us know what you think of the speakers when you get them (I love mine) and if you have any difficulty hooking them up.

The Rockit 5 or 6 Gen2's are apparently the best of the range.

I had Rockit 5's a few years ago and did not like them for the production of the style i was making.

They are however very good monitors.

Why is that? And what style were you playing?

I was using them to make Psytrance.

Monitors you choose by what you like.

You need to listen to a bunch of them....testing with your fav sound. Psy it was then.

I did not however.....test like this.

So after a while of using them...and then going to mates studio's and using theirs....i decided I did not like them.

Right now I have a pair of Tannoy Mach 2's.

Not exactly Studio Monitors....but I like the sound....and I am not producing anymore.

Will again some day....but now....no time.
