    Default Older (CDJ 500) gear?

So I was paroozing the web the other day and I think I found the most beautiful piece of electronic equipment ever made...

    http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/3...96a8a110c3.jpg

Yes, a CDJ 500S/700S. I like them so much in fact, that I'd just as much want a pair of those and a DJM 500/600 instead of two CDJ 400s and a DJM 800. Of course at the moment I can't afford either of them but hey they are nice to look at.

Does anyone have anything to say about the CDJ 500(S)/700 and or DJM 500/600?

Someone just posted that they were getting back into DJing and they had the 500's I think.

You usually get a good laugh whenever DJ newbies use the CDJ500s for the first time. There was a DJ competition in 2003 where a DJ mounted his CDs upside down. Didn't realize that the laser was concealed and the two plates would swing away just as the door was closed.

They're pretty nice because of their size. I've also used the CDJ500, the one where the jogwheel's below and the CD platter on top. That was way back in 1998.

As for the DJM 500 / 600, the 600's still pretty much an industry standard so you'll tend to see a lot of it. I've only used the DJM 500 once and didn't fiddle too much with it because the faceplate was pretty rusted. One difference I can still recall is something with the inputs on the 4th channel and perhaps less / different effects.

    Gonna bump this thread

A little looking on the bays of Es shows that you can pick up two CDJ 500s (plural not S model) for the price of one CDJ 200, give or take. DJM 600s are also rather cheap. Would they be OK to use as a home setup? I know the older models (the big'ns) don't have as much/any dampening, but I don't think this would be too much of a problem. 16% pitch range is enough for my uses, is the pitch bend resolution about the same as a CDJ 1000 or technics 1200?

My first CD decks were CDJ-500 mkII Limited's (same as Progen describes, the longer units with the jogwheel and loading tray seperate)

Having used CDJ-100's, in terms of feel they're kinda similar since they don't have touch sensitive jog-wheels (I don't think the 200's do either?) so it'll be the same as any CDJ really bar the 800/1000's and above

If you can get them cheap I'd recommend them, they're perfectly fine to mix on. The only potential drawback is the accuracy of the pitch adjust compared newer models (they're not as accurate as 1000's or Technics)

How much better would they be than say, a VCI 100? I know my VCI 100 SE is basically useless for pitch adjustment.

You'd have to use timecode; presumably they might not have the finest pitch adjustment but you would still get a longer fader to play with. To get that precision off a regular MIDI fader it would have to be 4% range or so.

I'm not using this from traktor, I'm just comparing the usability. I can get usability at 8% range in traktor, comes out to +-1.7% or something silly like that actual range.

For manual beatmaching, much better; I couldn't beatmatch with my VCI-100SE faders very well, whereas I've played out CDJ-500's

If you want to learn the ropes as a beginner then I think the CDJ-500's are a good place to start. I've seen some pretty good mixes on them on YouTube and as said I've owned a pair and spun on some at a venue

If you want to dive into playing with software and controllers, then the VCI-100SE is a great start for that

Basically they're both great for starting out, but depends what route you want to take

As for the DJM-500/600, I've not used one but the aforementioned club had a DJM-3000 (which I believe was pretty much a rackmount version of the DJM-600) which was OK. If it's cheap then it's definitely a good bit of kit to keep you going, as it used to be fairly club standard before the DJM-800/Xone 92 came along
