    Default Setting up Kontrol S4 in the Club

    Hi guys.

    I've got a gig where the host has booked out a nightclub. I want to use my Kontrol S4 into the PA/existing set up. So can anyone tell me what I need to do to set up the S4 into the mixer (I believe there is a DJM800 there) and be able to mix with the S4 using 4 track decks and have audio on their PA?

    Thanks so much in advance,

    first thing. talk to the promoter/host and make sure they are OK with you bringing your own gear and plugging in to the existing system. Some venues really arent down with this.

    Second thing. run your master out from your s4 into a spare channel on the DJM. Simple.

    Yep the club is cool with that.

    So basically my main outs (The TRS/RCA spots) into any of the free channels on the DJM 800 (2 will be taken by the existing CDJs i believe) ?

    Thanks so much

    I'd check to see if they have space as well... bring thick foam padding if you have to lay your controller on top of another DJ's decks...

    From experience;

    When using an S4 in a club / booth there is a good chance the connections are XLR or 1/4 inch, RCA is unusual.

    Trick is checking up front or being prepared for any connection. I carry and use one of these;

    Thats a UK link but the Art box is widely available anywhere. If you dont have a ground loop / isolatring transformer there is a good chance you'll get hum over the PA so this box takes care of two problems at once.

    + it's passive so no extra power lead.

    Great bit of kit.

    if youre going into any existing dj mixer, just RCA out to RCA in on one of the mixer channels. set existing mixer trim halfway on whatever channel youre on, fader all the way up, and then work your gain up from zero until the output is correct. this is as easy as it gets.

    as far as putting the S4 on other gear, buy/borrow a crane stand or odyssey lstandm and just fly your kit over whatever is there, it couldnt be any easier. plus it looks kinda more legit with the S4 on a stand imho

    Thanks so much guys.

    What do you mean by the 'trim' though? Cos I was expecting that the free channel, I'd just have the fader completely up, all the EQs pointing north, then adjusting the main output on the S4 until it's at a decent level then use the eq/faders on the S4.

    Look at a channel on your S4... see how it has a GAIN knob at the top. gain/trim same thing.

    So now you think of the S4 as your one "input unit" into a channel on the house mixer, so again just like loading a track into the S4, now you have another gain structure (eg - you are "loading" the s4 into the house mixer). setting it halfway or below half should be a fine starting point.

    And by halfway you mean the default, so 0 dB ?
