Why do you need a diode for arcade buttons?
My thoughts exactly :S
They’re just buttons, switches. You connect one end of the switch to a power source, the other to ground(or any other stuff you want in the middle, leds,lights, arduino in pin etc) et voila!

ground each button and wire the diode in so current can only pass in one direction?

See now that we know that it’s for a vci it makes more sense than just “diode for arcade buttons”
Yeah you do need them for the vci and they only work one way as for if they’re the correct ones maybe someone else can answer that otherwise I suppose you may trust the shop!
1N4001 should work fine.
