I think i’m gonna buy the Launchpad… As you said the APC20 is almost twice the price and i’m just getting into it…
Btw would it be stupid to buy a launchpad now and in 8 months or so an APC ? Since several people have more launchpad i guess not?
Btw isn’t the hardest part of this all ableton?
I’ve now seen many video’s bout it and it just looks very difficult…
I haven’t got the time yet to work with it so i don’t really know…
What are your experiences with ableton as a starter?
Its got a learning curve for sure, but its like chess. Easy to learn, long time to master lol. Its relatively simple, 8 rows of buttons correspond to 8 rows of cells in ableton. Each cell can have a loop, sample, drumbeat etc. 8 columns correspond to each track. You can play as many loops in a row, but only 1 in each column at a time. Its sorta like FL, but I like ableton better.
As for a starter, the launchpad comes with a watered down version of ableton live, and it will be more than enough to get you started. I played around with it for the first time when I got my launchpad, and got the hang of it quicky, but it can get as complicated as you like. Ie, drumracks, VSTs, VSTis, FX, crossfading etc.
The nicest thing about ableton is that it allows you to select timing for each clip, and keeps everything in Sync. You can also set BPM globally, and each clip will automatically set itself.
I could type all day, but I say pick up the pad if you want it, and play with the software. Fun times for sure.
This is true, however there is an important distinction that makes it different from Traktor.
In Traktor, if you trigger a cue point a millisecond after the beat, it will play the audio immediately and “push” it forward to keep it in sync.
In Ableton, if you trigger a clip a millisecond after the beat, it will wait until the next beat to start playing (or half note/whole note/measure, depending on your quantization settings). Basically this means you always have to hit the button slightly before the specified beat for it to sync properly. Personally, I find this a lot less natural than the way Traktor works.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Ableton Live for production, but it’s reasons like this that I prefer Traktor for DJing.

Somewhere in Preferences I think you can turn off quantize over all.
