about drunk ppl talkin to u when u play in the club

I regulary read this thread on the scratch forum as there is loads of fun in it :sunglasses: http://scratchlive.net/forum/discussion/?discussion_id=20955

and some of that thread was recently goin in the direction of requests, so I was just wondering how u guys deal with ppl and requests?

Im constantly havin ppl comin up to me and trying to talk to me when im quein tracks with my headphones on, and nowadays I just give them pen and paper, solves 2 things, I can work/mix without beeing botherd by some drunk screaming in my ear or trying to sing(omg) and I have a note to remind me about waht track they wanted to hear(my memory is rly rly bad, if im talkin to ppl, the second they step away I have forgotten what they wanted) and if it fits the flow, ill try to get it in.

as a bonus, u can get weird notes with phonenumbers, strange letters and words that dont exist and so on

so how do u handle it?

Smile nod yes then usually disregard . Although if I’m feeling nice I’ll take some requests from hot girls . Guys that make requests are punks in my book .

The biggest and most annoying thing I hate is when someone request something that is way on the opposite spectrum of what you are currently play. Playing industrial and they request 50 cent or something… yes this happens.

It never fails, right when I’m in the middle of cross fading and keeping the beat matched I get ppl talking to me!!! LOL!! I just give them the ā€œgive me a secā€ hand gesture but they keep talking so I just nod like I know what they told me. Mean while my headphones are on and I can’t hear a word they said!

Word.

lol i hate it. I never tried the pen and paper thing I really should, because it really erks me when I am cueing up my tracks and some dude is screaming can you play soulja boy.

But usually i will be like yea I will work it in the mix but by then after the next couple songs they forget so I am good to go.

Back in the days when I used to have a lot of gigs, I hated it. I just spoke to them in a language that I knew they would not talk. German has never failed me outside Germany.

One time there was this Twat in Denmark though, that THOUGHT he knew German, and fuck that was annoying. I mean, his German was REALLY REALLY bad… I got rid of him by playing a track he wanted (Which luckily was planned in my set anyways)… MORONS!

Yeah, and those who come up and wish for some Rick Astley in a Techno/House club, they should become shot in the head! RAGE!!

Oh, and dont you just hate those Trainspotters?! DAYEM! lolz

i’ve got a few rihanna, thingthings requests during my techouse / mnml sets. i’m always verry supriced that people could ask such records in the club that they are @ the deejay who is playing. what are they thinking ?!?

but it all depends on who is asking off course but mostly for guys i just ask the bouncer to remove them from the club because they’re not comming for the music

awnsering which record i’m playing i don’t mind it’s always the same timecode vinyl of trakor

the aabsolute worst is when they don’t know what they want and ask what i have in my library? like im fucking uploading some tracks to your ipod. the funniest is the dudes who are like man my girlfriend wants this song she’ll love you forever… ok when can i fuck her?

My favorite lately has been
ā€œHi, can you play something I can dance to?ā€
ā€œLike what?ā€
ā€œSomething like synthpoppy?ā€
ā€œCan you name a band?ā€
ā€œblank stareā€
ā€œUm… how’s about something like Apoptygma Berzerk?ā€
ā€œYeah, play <insert obscure song I’ve never heard in a club before>!ā€
ā€œUh… how’s about Starsign?ā€
ā€œWho’s that by?ā€
ā€œApopā€
ā€œNo, I don’t want to hear them. Can you play Combichrist?ā€
(to self) ā€œI hate you. I hate you so fucking much right now plays Combichristā€

what is the actual definition of a ā€˜trainspotter’ ? are those the people that try to stand beside or behind you to see and critique everything you’re doing? or is there another meaning to that term?

i dont know what that term means, but i do have those ppl behind me sometimes. "hey dont forget to boost the bass, hey what does this button do? is that traktor? where’s your turntables? why dont u use the cdj 1000, they’re right there and they’re so much better.

Trainspotter is a person that is looking at every record that you play and writes it down. A friend of mine had an idea to make a record label which should have been called ā€œTrainspotters Nightmareā€ with the label only saying that, all labels being the same color etc etc… what a nightmare!

Anyways, a trainspotter originally is someone who spots trains.. search it on Google, find the wiki, and then replace train with vinyl and you will have a funny read

so a music ā€˜trainspotter’ is someone who takes note of the tracks being played by the dj… is that a negative or positive thing to label someone?

I mean, if the trainspotter is a dj as well and rips off your mixes, then yeah, i can see that as being a negative thing…but possibly someone who is just interested in the music could be termed as a positive thing?

or do they ā€˜spot’ train-wreck mixes . .. :stuck_out_tongue:

According to Urban Dictionary

Trainspotter:
"A person who can sucessfully identify obscure music a DJ plays. A hardcore trainspotter can take it a step further and identify the source of obscure samples. "

re: people beside, or behind you watching your every move when mixing…

how do you guys feel about that? - some people dont mind, while others find it annoying, just like how someone would be standing over your shoulder watching you work on the computer…

would you ever tell anyone to kindly move ā€˜over there’ cuz they’re crowding you? - or is it something that should be accepted by the DJ?

Id take it as a compliment that someone wants to watch the mix, unless they are being a hater about the setup - then id tell them where they can shove it. If your doing some cool stuff on a computer then people are going to want to see whats going on, on the screen. I certainly dont see the harm in it someone watching unless they are getting in your way, you could allways ask\motion for them to give you some room.

I was actually watching part of someones Ableton set at a Doof last weekend, i asked if i could watch for a bit and he was more than happy for me to check out what he was doing. I wasnt taking notes on tracks, just getting a look at how someone else uses Ableton.

I think, for me, it depends on the people. Some people just sit back and watch and are curious and respectful and ask when I’m done. I’ve had guys sit over my shoulder and just stare and ask questions when I’m obviously working. Usually I just take my space and as long as they don’t bother me I don’t say anything. If they start getting to me I’ll tell them ā€œLook, I’m busy.ā€ If it keeps happening I tell one of my partners/promoters… if it KEEPS happening I get security.

LoLz

I have a tendency to forget whatever was requested too… but that’s usually cuz I’m drinking.

Anyhow, that’s where I sort of like playing at raves. I’ve never ever gotten a request at a rave.
