ad hoc networks
hi guys im sure this has already been covered but im getting stuck with it and cannot find anything, im trying to set up an ad-hoc network between my android phone and laptop, ive set up the network on the laptop but the phone cant find it… am i doing something wrong?
I don’t believe android supports the ad hoc networking feature.

is this for TouchOSC?
yeah im trying to get touch osc to work, im looking at an android tablet, i cant afford an ipad and thought maybe an android tablet would do the job, i can pick up a 10.2" for £130! much cheaper.
word of advice the ipad and touch osc are fairly crap to use live, its fun for a quick play but gets boring very fast
aah, ok cheers for that, just thought itd look good, but playing out every week i can see your point, i wouldnt be using the tablet for anything else, thing i should maybe just get creative with my nanopad 
, i dont know, can androids be connected via usb and work?? might still have one as a toy :s
touchosc and ipad are not crap live
I use touchosc and Ipad2 over a adhoc network and never had any problems
i get 0 latency and you can create as many pages and controllers as you like
you can change the layout when u want to make a controller its amazing
its not like if you want a new midi controller you have to go drop £££ again and again
just change the page layout to suit you and your good to go

didnt mean it derogatory by saying toy, i just meant getting an android as a toy not to use as midi controller, until the option to use via ad hoc becomes available or i can afford an ipad. I can really see the advantage of being able to just program a new page.
its handy on that sence but all it takes is a wifi drop out which happends on about 50% of computers and laptops at least once a day and it means you have no control, with mine when that happends I have a shit time geting it connected and without restarting both my laptop, and ipad i get a huge delay so i guess it all depends on ur own variables, theres prob ways to streamline this but I wouldnt risk using it live again, I find it fun to play with and the likes of “Djay” are fun for parties etc..
i have never had a wifi drop out on my macbook EVER and i have ran 2 ipads at the same time,and if you ever did get a wifi dropout you can reconnect in a second on macs
you dont have to restart anything
i am guessing you aint using a mac stiffy?
on mac everything works flawless its what mac’s were made to do
ive had a mac before and had drop outs quite a lot, its just not something i would feel safe playing live unless i was headlining a show and people were paying like 80 quid a ticket to see me, i could sit in front of a stage and do it… not if im trying to rock a club
Ritchie Hawtin uses a tab as a controller, with touchOSC. I use my ipod touch. Fun for some effect but if i had an ipad i would seriouly use it.
I have literally never had that happen. On any computer I’ve used since my first WiFI card (back in the 802.11b days), on Windows 2000 and XP, Linux 2.4 branch and 2.6 branch with hacked (i.e., not supported by the developer) drivers, OS X, and iOS…on any router/AP I’ve used (mostly linksys, cisco, and netgear, usually with pretty paranoid security settings).
Either something is wrong with your router or something about your network setup can’t handle renewing a DHCP lease…which still shouldn’t require a restart and is really messed up.
this is servals laptops, pc’s, old mac, 3 different routers, ipad, iphone, nokia smart phones. just internet disconnecting and reconnecting
well i’ve never had a problem with my iPod Touch running TouchOSC and my mac mini or my dad’s macbook pro. but thats not to say yours will be ok. if your mate has a iPod Touch, iPad or Android then borrow it and give it a go to see what you make of it, as it is a big investment to make just to find the device isn’t reliable with your setup.
i personally think TouchOSC is a brilliant idea, which rivals the customisation abilities of making your own controller. and you can constantly customise it until it suits your style of playing. i’d definatly recommend giving it a go and seeing what you think.
true.. i like miditouch’s capabilities the fact you can edit it on the device 
yes, if one thing needs to be added on touchOSC, it’s that it needs to have a built in editor.
Do you mean internet, 'cuz I have at&t service at home, which means it drops out randomly throughout the day (btw, at&t sucks) for seconds to minutes. But that has nothing to do with WiFi.
If not…I’d seriously consider buying a Router/AP that doesn’t suck or looking into interference/noise from other nearby networks and possibly changing your antenna channel.
There’s no reason a modern computer should drop wifi randomly. Maybe back in 2003ish. Not today.
why are people bringing up things about routers when this thread is about ad hoc sessions?
Any mention of wifi routers or internet is irrelevant, a wireless ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network. The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a preexisting infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed (infrastructure) wireless networks. Instead, each node participates in routing by forwarding data for other nodes.
wow that started a bit of a debate… so.. is the general consensus that android and ad hoc dont work?? is there any other way to do it? id really kinda like to give it a go even if just for home use or smaller gigs.
easiest, laziest way would be to find a cheap old iPod touch and give the thing a go. 2nd gen maybe.
