Hey, i have recently started university in Manchester. Over the past month i have fallen in love with minimal and electro house. I have been buying song after song from DJdownload and beatport, to be fair i have a nice little collection growing which sprung the idea of maybe becoming a bedroom DJ.
After speaking to a few friends I was advised to download Traktor and to come and look at the tutorials on your You Tube page. I have had a good look through the tutorials but im still finding all this stuff hard to understand. I have tried setting up grids etc but the songs just still don’t want to sync.
After this whole life story i was wondering if there is a site with video tutorials for total beginners everything explained inside out.
BTW- my girlfriend was born in Salford (a real Manc). Im just up the road in Preston.
Get used to the rain and gloomy weather and you will love Manchester.
Hey guys thanks for the replies, i have been reading through the traktor bible Karlos linked me to for griding, It says when griding house music use a BPM Detection Range of 70 190 and for DnB 150 to 170. If i was to use a BPM Detection Range of 70 to 190 and i was mixing some house music then say i decided to drop a drum and bass song would this effect the mixing process. In other words would this not work?
Setting your BPM range will be fine, but that is just what the analysis will kick out for the BPM. You will still need to go in and check it, set your beat grids and make sure they are right, especially if you are going to be using Sync and not manually beat matching.
We do advanced tutorials and beginner tutorials
You will be hard pressed to find another site that can teach you like DJTT can.
If you find you cant get a grid to line up then just keep practicing !
Try using a tap tempo program to get you the ball park range of your track, then line it up how we explain in our beatgriding video.
If your songs arn’t syncing then your grids are out, just like beatmatching laying down tight grids takes some practice - keep practicing and you will get there !
I’ve started DJing, well awaiting my VCI-100 which should be delivered any day now. Just kitting out at the mo with Traktor Pro and getting a few tunes together. I work at Manchester University.
Hey Steve, the VCI is a great way to start controllerism (and finish actually). I get a lot of use out of mine.
Im a vinyl DJ for years but got the digital bug about 5 years ago. DVS is my main love but the VCI is great fun piece of kit.
@Davi, i totally recommend the VCI mate. You should pop round to Steves when he gets it and have a go teehee.
Lovin the NW of England representing here (hahaha) full of bloody DJs from L.A in this place. Damn them and their year round sunshine.
I would think that NYC has some fairly decent representation here, but I digress. VCI is definately a sweet piece of kit, but Ive been really happy with my herc rmx and nanopad/kontrol combo (spinning 4 decks of min/tech/electro has never been easier lol). As for beginning, you should start slow. Familiarize yourself with beatmatching by ear, once you get a handle on that, then learn how to grid. Knowing how to beatmatch by ear is an invaluable skill. Grids definately take time to learn but the article Karlos mentioned is fantastic! The most amazing tip I could give you is to find a DJ or even produce who is willing to show you the ropes. My manager used to DJ, and Ive made friends with some amazing veteran DJ’s who have no problem showing me their tricks and giving me advice on how to improve. It helps that Im using some very advanced gear and methods in the NYC rave scene, and Im sure that you will find someone who will appreciate your passion. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. 5 hours ago I was spinning a massive min/tech house set, which brings up another point, try to record everything you do and listen to it, let others listen it. It fucking sucks when you do someting amazing but cant remember how to do it and you dont have a reference point to work with. Oh and another thing, if you want to get booked, you need to become a memorable part of the scene you would like to spin in. I find myself going to every club even if it means 5 venues in one night. This halloween is going to be retarded in regards to parties, Im booked for 3 different places lol!!! Good luck to you and welcome to the best community for Midi Fighters (I no longer call myself a controllerist, Im a midi fighter)
If you ever need help, advice, or any such stuff, feel free to PM me or just post a message, Ill do my best to help.
Thanks a lot for the big reply man, i’m not sure whether to start doing everything via a program like traktor or just buying some decks and a mixer. All a bit too much to be fair, there are so many routes you can go down.
What would you guys say is the best idea for a beginner as i have got to the point where i defiantly need something to control the decks eqs and effects whether its on decks or via my mac?!
Hey guys, this is my first mix using Traktor without a midi controller etc, just a mouse so its not exactly easy to control more than one thing at a time so most of the mixes are a bit sketchy.
