Anyone else feel a little overwhelmed?

Anyone else feel a little overwhelmed?

Anyone else feel a little overwhelmed by how young famous and known producers are? Doesn’t it make you wish you started production/mixing at a MUCH earlier age?

I just feel overwhelmed by the fact that, there are 15 year olds who are big name EDM artists, and producers my age (20 years old) like Zedd, PR, Hardwell, the list goes on, that are just at the top tier of their game.

20 year olds yea. I don’t know of any 15 year olds tho..?

Youngest I can think of is Madeon and he turned 18 in May.

Computers are making it way easier for teens to get into music production and djing

I hear where you’re coming from. Some times it gets to me. I’m 26 and just starting out. Problem is, dwelling on those thoughts and bringing yourself down aren’t going to help you get to that level. I know extremely tallented musicians who never made it and people with little experience in comparison who are succeeding. You need to determine were you want to go with things and don’t let anything get in your way. If you truly want it, you will get it. Just my 2 cents.

Yep. this does creep into my mind, but then I remember to be myself and let my shit happen.

I was shocked the first time I saw Benni Benassi…

I actually find it more inspiring than overwhelming. Sure a lot of what got them famous is pure natural talent, but they’ve also most likely put in unfathomable hours of work and practice to become the best. And that motivates me to work harder as well. If these kids have the discipline to work so hard, then so do I.

Just remember… Anyone who is famous for anything got there either through working/practicing their ass off (95% of cases), having good connections, or making a sex tape. :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: I should add that “working” doesn’t necessarily imply that they were in the studio or practicing the whole time. A lot of people also get famous because their product is just above average, but they “worked” really hard to market themselves intelligently and efficiently.

A-Trak was 15 when he won the DMC’s

17 had some production credits on releases and a weekly Internet show that ran into the 200+ listener range this was over 10 years ago and was out of the loop by time I was 20 quit makin it a passion and turned into a hobby … Haven’t really tried getting back into honestly family life and work makes dedicating that much time to it impossible and ruins all creative thought when you over work and drain yourself…

Don’t expect to get anything just strive to achieve doing things to the best eventually you’ll get success if its what you want.

So what?

If anything, it makes more sense. Kids have way more time to sit around and do whatever they like as opposed to adults who have to work, socialize, etc. Some kids sit around and play video games all day and become extremely good at Call of Duty, while others sit around and make music all day and become really good at music production.

Yeah, whenever I think about it, it definitely brings me down and the thought of “what’s the point?” creeps in. But man, every now and then, when you come across a photo or a video of a top producer/dj and seeing everyone feeling the music just brings the motivation right back up.

Sounds like simple jealousy to me.

You should be proud that you aren’t grovelling for gigs and whoring for releases.

YOU MUST SOCIALIZE!

This is very true. I’m not sad that my parents mostly discouraged videogames after I started high school. Music all the way!

I guess it depends why you got into this sort of stuff…

There will always be someone better. I have fallen flat on my face while trying a trick snowboarding only to have a 9 year old throw a backflip over the 80 foot gap next to me. If anything - you should feel inspired. At the very least, happy on that persons behalf for their achievements and skill. In my opinion, this type of attitude has no place in the DJ industry - or any creative industry for that matter. Supporting creative efforts is an absolutely fundamental quality in successful people. Comparing yourself and your achievements to others is not a good way to progress (or assess your progression).

TLDR; Its about the music - not the attention.

I think it reflects more on the style of music being produced these days. I like it, but it does lend itself more towards the sort of obsession that a “nerdy kid” can have. That’s not a knock, it’s just that modern producers are more like computer programmers or gaming nerds than real musical artists.

Not saying that is right or wrong and I like a lot of the producers mentioned in this thread.

It’s just a different game these days, not better or worse, just a different game as the musical tools have changed and are less appealing to traditional musicians, so people with a different skillset are able to excel.

I just wish the current crop of producers would be a little bit more original, rather than watching YouTube instruction videos and copycat:ing each other. I.e. technically brilliant but music-wise poor.

I’m 34, we all get old eventually, who gives a shit.
