Apple is moving to ARM processors for macOS 11

Just like they did before with the transition from PowerPC to Intel. Interesting times coming for sure. It will take a few years before they finally phase out support for their current lineup.

Needless to say. DO NOT UPDATE your Mac to macOS 11 until the makers of the software and hardware you rely on have stated they are compatible. This is a major transition so expect things to be rougher around the edges for early adopters.

MacOS 11 Supported Devices

  • MacBook - 2015 and later
  • MacBook Air - 2013 and later
  • MacBook Pro - Late 2013 and later
  • Mac mini - 2014 and later
  • iMac - 2014 and later
  • iMac Pro - 2017 and later (all models)
  • Mac Pro - 2013 and later

Oh I can already see the shaitshow this will make

Has arm released a CPU using CISC? If not, this is gonna be a shitshow for software compatibility.

Not that I’m aware of but I honestly haven’t been keeping a close eye on ARM progress. In theory Rosetta 2 translates the app during install to help keep some of the performance but there’s no way to know how well tasks that require the complex instruction sets will respond. Guess time will tell? I’ll be sticking to my 16" for a fair bit regardless.

I’m guessing this is going to be te biggest problem for VST’S
