AUDIO LATENCY in Traktor Pro???

AUDIO LATENCY in Traktor Pro???

hello djtt-geeks.

since a while i’m playing in many clubs now.
my setup is the vestax vci 100, TPro 1.2.4 and the Audio 2 DJ-Interfac from NI.
now i’m wondering what the audio latency can do in the club or what does it do in fact?
and how can i pump up the volume over my software/hardware.the level on the mixers where i’m playng and Traktor always are touching the red mark.

thanks for help!!!

Ur playing in clubs and you DONT know what the fuck latency is ??? Are you serious. Tell that club to hire me. Shit.

But really, All latency is is how fast the data is transferred from ur controller into movements on the software.

thank you saidancer!

so what happens if the latency is high and what happens if it’s low?

Latency is the delay in which the controller / timecode cd / vinyl reacts with your computer so having Low latency is faster

basically in your software setting the audio buffer to a low setting means faster reaction time

but it depends on your pc and audio interface as the lower you set the buffer the more prone to pops and audio glitches your set up will be

its all about finding a balance

fast computer + decent audio interface = low latency

well put hense why most djs still use cds

and does it affects on the volume?

No latency does not affect volume.
If latency is too high the time it takes for you to press play and the the track actually playing will be delayed.

If latency is too low for your machine you will experience pops and clicks during playback.

Lower your latency until you get popping sounds during playback and then up it until the pops go. You then have your latency set at the optimal level for YOUR setup. Dont listen to anyone else when it comes to latency. People will tell you they have it at 1ms, most of those people are liars.
Some do achieve 1ms but for most its unrealistic. Get what you can get and settle for it or get a better setup. Anything around 5ms is fine .

Latency is an individual thing down to the laptop you have.

You should never have clipping when using Traktor NEVER.

You should put the Audio 2 volume up full and set Traktors Master at around 0:00db or a little above.

Leave yourself some mixing room on the upfaders so have them around 60%.

This will give you a good clean sound. You should then adjust the mixer to get the volume you need.

If you arent getting enough volume do not blast Traktor into oblivion cus it will just sound shit.

You should definitely read up on how to optimise your setup and get a good sound. No one need to be a rocket scientist but to be a pro DJ you should know your own kit and how to use it.

Start with the Traktor manual. Its all in there for basic knowledge dude.

thanks alot!

-CLOSED-

No worries.

Closed???

OK Case closed !!!

the difference between playing out on 5ms latency and 15ms latency is not as relevant as having inconsistent latency, say one time you hit the button and its 4ms and the next time you hit the button you get 15ms.

humans can deal well with consistent latencies, even if they are on the higher side, you just adapt to it…

Oh and FYI, even CDJs have some latency, as they are essentially doing the same thing as your VCI computer combo, ie processing a digital data source, timestretching it if appropriate and then spitting out audio.

what is that CLIPPING?
my tracks usually have 99db.i use igain to pump up the volume of tracks.

An example of clipping in traktor.

Hi Carlos, thanks for this. I have the same setup as OP. Traktor Pro, Audio 2 DJ, VCI-100SE + a Macbook. When I play in clubs I have the Audio2DJ up full, but I keep the Traktor master volume a bit lower. I adjust the volume on the club mixer. I like to mix with my upfaders at the top, I think it would be a bit weird to have them at 60% - is this wrong?

Yeah its down to personal taste but if your mixing on the VCI with your upfaders at the top how do you actually mix tracks in and out if you have no fader room?

I guess your mixing internally with the VCI.

Do you mix with the gain knobs ?

Sorry what I meant was that when I’m mixing, I have the upfaders at full when I want the tune at full volume. I still mix using the upfaders. It was just that you said keep the upfaders at 60% - so do you not put them any higher than 60% at all when mixing?

Ah yeah get ya.
I dont tend to have the faders at the top mainly because t i always like to have some room for compensation if the Auto Gain in Traktor doesnt quite get it right (which it can from time to time).
Also some tracks have quiet bits that just need an extra bit of volume.

60% was just a guideline to start with

I never seem to have an issue with getting enough volume in the clubs so like to keep a bit of head room on the faders.

my master volume only can go to -10db without touching the red marker, what do i do wrong?

Mongala, I’m with you…

Are you serious? What kind of DJ are you??? That sort of rubbish is what I hear kid wannabes say. Of course you need to know about the science and technology of the industry to be good. That’s the problem with the industry today, is an influx on arrogant people who think they don’t need to know about these things, which are important.

You’re telling me you don’t need to know what the fuck you are using or doing to be good? Who are you kidding? If you don’t know the science with it I think you two better start doing you’re homework or get another career. I spent enough time gaining the PROPER knowledge about all these things to become as comprehensive as I am today without the need or want for people who think they can just “wing it” and be good without knowing anything about the fundamentals trashing the industry.
