Best (free?) Software for ripping vinyl -> .mp3 ?

Best (free?) Software for ripping vinyl → .mp3 ?

Hey ev’ body,

I have a Hercules RMX and a MacMini (10.4). What is the best software to use for making .mp3 files from my wax?

I bought a copy of Traktor, but I want to keep that on my MacBookPro to use portably. Besides, the process seems laborious: (1)Rip to .wav in traktor (2)rename files in finder (3)convert to .mp3 w/[otherprogram] (4)update ID3 w/[yetanotherprogram].

(and then load in to traktor and grid them all … but that’s another discussion)

I would really like to do all that with one program … is that possible?

What are other people’s processes for doing this? Certainly I’m not the first…

try audicity.

Seconded, audacity is the best free recording program out there IMO.

Thirded for truth. Audacity is the way to go.

Easy to use and free. Cant go wrong there.

yeah man - best straightforward multi purpose recording software out there

Cant you record them straight into traktor ? i know its not ideal but it does the job doesnt it?

that would really overcomplicate things…

You would have to input your TT to one of the inputs, then set that deck to audio thru - then record the set through the mix record function, which would split it up into 6.29 sections.

Just use audacity  and your soundcard. So much easier

agreeed .. just an option if tracktor scratch is already all setup ?

…i like this one:

it´s free and very good imo and it doesn´t require an installation, you just start the .exe - cpu load isn´t a problem either…and vst and asio. french peeps can use it also:slight_smile:

this one is also recommended, unfortunally it only records into mp3 format directly wich can be a plus, since you don´t have to convert - on the other hand you won´t have a hi q wav version…

it´s a mini program, no installation needed either. very simple and straight forward interface.

Unless you’ve professionally installed your souncard into your wall and sunk all the wires - the hassle to unplug the TT and plug it into channel 5/6 on the soundcard is far less than the hassle to try and find a way around it on traktor.

The only way you could really do it, is if you plugged the phono cables (component of the multi-cores) into the mixer, then output mixer from the ‘record’ output back into the soundcard, and did it that way.. IMHO - divn’t bother man!

Have any of you really tried Audacity? It sounds like shit! Go with Wavosaur as recommended, it sounds a lot better.

Seriously? I couldn’t disagree with you more.

I’ve used Audacity for years and I’ve always been happy with the results. When I used to play guitar I used it to make recordings and such.

Maybe it’s your hardware? Are you plugging the input in through a microphone input? Or it could be the settings in Audacity. I dont know, man.

I actually used Audacity to transfer vinyl a couple times, though not for the same purpose you are; my grandfather had some old records that were wearing out and needed them preserved.

Yeah, with a decent soundcard, i’ve never had trouble with audacity  its the shit!
