What’s up guys. So recently I found out that the university internet is about 80Mbps, that’s approximately 10MBps. Does anyone know if they can track exactly where I am or the information on my laptop, i’m not logged in with a university account, just using a wired connection.
Well, they can’t see the info on your laptop, but they can monitor what you download over their connection. From a technical standpoint, I’m not sure of the limits on how specifically they monitor, and beyond that, how they use such information is up to whatever you’ve agreed to about the university computing policy.
Considering you’re on a university connection, and I’m SURE you’ve somewhere knowingly, or unknowingly, agreed to their Terms of Use, they’ll have your ass if you’re not smart with it. So be smart…
Yes, be very careful. My dad works for DePaul University and does consulting with several other colleges around the country.
The main thing to be concerned about it filesharing sites. Although they usually don’t due individuals anymore, record companies contact state AND private colleges. The school will then turn over the names of students who have downloaded music illegally through the school’s internet connection. It’s not just students, my dad’s boss actually got sued. They had to settle out of court for $4,000. Just be careful.
no they cannot see what is on your laptop. however they can see everything you download from the internet. you can however encrypt all your communications so they cannot see anything you do over the internet. the person on the other end must be using the same encryption to receive the messages, you could also use a vpn to establish the connection. The university should have settings in place on there firewall to stop any bit torrent traffic if they know way they are doing. this is not overly complicated to by pass however you will be breaking ur end user agreement. my uni lab is 1gig per second btw.
Ya I was just thinking for days when I wanna download some music and torrents. I figured since the university is the ISP that it would be impossible to hide anything from them.
Just don’t do anything stupid. There was a kid when I was going to school, whom was literally expelled for messing with the network so he could get more bandwidth for torrenting and filesharing. He actually had a few servers running out of his dorm room. Stupid.
first thing it is possible to do is use somthing like maltego to start building up a map of the network. you are not breaking any laws by doing this. The next thing to do is run a program such as wireshark to see what programs are running across the network. At the very least u will need to understand flags in packets on the top 3 layers of the tcip stack. At this point there is a good chance you are breaking ur end user agreement, however probly not the law. As you are just reding information your computer will see anyway. At my university doing this would not break my end user agreement however for most students it would
From this information you will be able to build up a picture of what they might be using to monitor you. For total privacy you can use a VPN. Just out of interest is this in your dorm room or actual university buildings
My uni connection is pretty strict. Had bit torrent installed on my laptop (wasn’t using it for downloading music so no flaming please!) and wasn’t allowed to connect until I uninstalled it! Clever stuff.
Their reading and controlling your mind through ultraviolet radio waves shot from satelite’s orbiting the earth, that are penetrating your body as we speak, there always listening… your only salvation is to cover your head with a rubber helmet… That’s I do anyway. wait I’ve said too much, now back to catching flies… LMAO
