I don’t think so guys. I for example when i play progressive house, i use a lot of tracks off bedrock records because the style is exactly what i like to play. but i don’t limit myself to ONLY that label tho. If i put on a track and it happens to be another bedrock tune, i don’t take it off again ya know .. When i play prog & psy i tend to stick to about 3 labels for basically the same reason. just don’t play 2 hours of deadmau5 ( or i will personally fly over there and slap y’all )

Let me clarify. When I said variety I not only meant the music itself, but also the variety/depth in music selection. The latter might not matter to the average listener, but I think other djs look at the depth put into selecting music for a set. It’s easy to tell if some one spent time looking for unique music for their set (not that it can’t be done with all music from one label, but it’s less ikely they put as much effort or time in music selection).
I agree with you. Yeah you could be called lazy if you aren’t taking advantage of the extra time sync gives you, but as long as you are enjoying yourself and the crowd is digging it, it doesn’t really matter. And just because someone uses sync doesn’t mean that they can’t beat match manually. Being a good dj (if your aim is to play clubs etc.) is about being flexible and knowing how to manually beat match helps this. I dj with ableton because I choose to. I know how to beat match with cdj’s and vinyl and can use serato and traktor. I feel like most people here take advantage of the sync function to do more anyway. To each his own

i fail to see a problem with the original post about the guy playing 3 Toolroom songs in a whole set. Who cares? (besides the flamer obviously) if he is playing these 3 songs back to back to back then ok, yes, it would probably be much easier to mix, but as i understood the post this wasnt the case. Generally Toolroom is one of the better labels imo so personally i would probably welcome it.
How long was the set? Lets say its a short hour set in which he is playing like 10 songs or so, if he wants to keep a particular vibe whats the problem in playing 30% Toolroom songs? What if the tracks are spread out so he plays one at the start, one in the middle and one at the end? Is that still “cheating”?
I think most of the talk about some people “cheating” is largely bullshit. The only thing i consider cheating is if you are putting in a CD, hitting play, and pretending to do stuff. Even auto beatmatching i couldnt care less about; is whoever is DJing playing good music and keeping a good flow? Yes? Then thats fine by me.
I still say nothing beats cheating like the guy the other night who popped in a CD and acted the whole time.. I was embarrassed to be in the booth with him.
it’s far from cheating, my favourite label is Freerange by far above any other label since getting back into mixing, my latest mix has at least 4 of their tracks in it, because i like them! but you try mixing them, sure as hell aint the same bpm key or anything, infact it’s a pretty hard label to mix i find so different are all their artists and releases.
