djing with ear problems (tinitus)
Well i have had a lot of problems with my ears over the last few months , ear infection. So i went to see an ent specialist and he did a hearing test and a few other things. Well he said i have tinnitus. Since i went to see him he thinks i have hyperacusis. My question is can i still dj with it and would earplugs help ? . I am only a bedroom dj and dj online. Is it time to get a new hobby.
Ear-plugs will block de high-frequencies (which can be dangerous to your ears) without losing sound quality (you still hear the music playing, but at a lower volume). But if you already have tinnitus, ear-plugs aren’t a direct cure for it (it prevents it to get worse). But according to some recent news i’ve read, scientists do believe that the consumption of some kinds psychedelic drugs do eliminate tinnitus, so a couple of years more and we could have a remedy sold on pharmacies that eliminates it, who knows?
Hope is the last to die
Ed is on point. Ear plugs are ESSENTIAL. I don’t have this condition, but I still wear ear plugs whenever I DJ.
My ears still hurt when I go to the club sometimes due to my past tendencies of not wearing ear plugs… your ears only last so long!
Furthermore, you may want to check this out as it could be a cool way to enhance the bass without hurting the ears: Subpac
I don’t think ear plugs are necessary for bedroom DJing. You can mix well with the volume quite low.
I barely have my headphone cue volume at 1 when I’m DJing.
Definitely get earplugs! It took a while for my ears to recover. It sucks so much not being able to listen music pleasantly.
Yes, it is mandatory that you get some good quality earplugs. The ones i have are from a dutch company called Alpine, they cost me about 20 euros but they have various types of filters, so it is not only good to use in discos (, but also when you are taking a walk in a noisy city, for example. But i just wanted to explain you that earplugs won’t cure tinnitus (unfortunately), but they will prevent it, for sure.
Those look like the British version of the Etymotic ER20s?
Maybe look into a custom made ear plug if you can afford it.
Get musician earplugs and practise with them to get use to them. Also if you are digital DJing work on DJing more visually.
Got a good cold one day (way 30 years back when not even thinking about jumping around on the dance floor). Got tinnitus with a humming sound in combination with a very high pitch sound. None of the medications worked, had several scans and the chance of healing was slim to none. Hearing tests showed a dip (up to -15dB) between 300Hz and 1200Hz and some over sensitivity at around 6000Hz (+4dB) which makes hearing at parties very hard and loud noises sound like crackling.
However, DJ is no problem. Some sounds aren’t what they should be for me, but are okay for the crowd. Learn to live with that fact. I don’t experience any problems in having fun as bedroom DJ and doing live mixes at several local radio stations.
mmm…I have developed Tinnitus and hearing loss in my right ear.
Its been a year since I have mixed a beat and its still there…
Will be looking to get a hearing aid in the next year or 2, as its affecting me work. Can’t concentrate on 1 person speaking to me if there are many talking in the office etc. Really bad when using the phone and have people around me.
