DJM800 Owners

I’m going to look at a used one tomorrow - amazing deal - which got me thinking if anything’s wrong with it.
Anyone who owns or has owned one - is there anything in paticular I need to check?

TY

Besides obvious physical stuff, I would bring an Ipod/Iphone with a 1/8 to RCA adapter and check each channel to make sure all inputs are working. Preferably I’d check for CF bleed by hooking it up to speakers as well. I always hate how guys with Pioneer mixers slam the levels into the red, not sure if over time that would degrade the quality of the internal components or just the speakers it’s sending such a hot signal to. Maybe ask him to show you how where he dj’s with the master set at? It will be real easy to tell then if he’s slamming the levels into the red. If it was me I would want to be able to hook the mixer up and test all the inputs and outputs before buying. if you have any doubts at all i’d walk on the purchase. There are ton of things that could be wrong with it that you can’t or wont find out till you get to using it indepth. Generally if its to good to be true, its generally bad. Maybe I have no faith in society or peoples morals.

Check ALL ins and outs if you can, including phono preamps. One thing that can go in pio mixers is the master attenuator switch on the back, so check that.

i agree with the checking of all the ins and outs…every one, make sure all the pots are crackle free and click at the centre point.

ive repaired pretty much every pioneer mixer over the years and have never came across an 800 with a duff attenuator switch…not even the attenuator pot on the 600

Have you fixed a booth out which outputs a high pitched noise when plugged into monitors? That and a missing center click on one of my low pots… That looks like a tough job.

Yep agreed - hopefully they have something to hook up to it - if not I won’t bother..
Cheers folks

You don’t own a set of small computer speakers? When I was looking around I would always bring them, a set of headphones, a power strip and some music. Just test everything possible. Maybe borrow someone else’s?

If it doesn’t work out, Buy mine!

Can a DJM owner damage internal parts of the mixer by continually operating the the mixer in the Red? More specifically the the input VU’s in the red and or the Master in the red?

Yeah I could take an iPod and some computer speakers, I’m gonna call them again in the morning…

Hah - this is silly money mate otherwise I would…

Morning boys - it was a scam advert - thought it was too good to be true - I’m gonna link the ad here so people don’t fall for it.

Won’t put all my emails in here but it’s a well known Gum Tree scam apparently:

All the emails I got match that thread exactly - so stay away folks

Now, FEP - how about £350 for yours then :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

£350? i would not of even emailed them.

at £500 i would of still thought it too good to be true

haha yeah that was pretty obvious. Either way at least you know what to look for when you’re testing out a used mixer.

Yes and no. Yes, in theory, but no in most practical situations, it depends on your setup.

The gains are the only meaningful analogue component of the digital DJMs, they’re pre-ADC. Thus, it’s actually possible to fry them a bit by clipping them too hard for too long. Keeping in mind that DJM’s actually “clip” about 5 theoretical LEDs above the “OVER” meter level. That being said, I have seen some shit and it’s definitely a thing.

However, in a conventional CDJs and a DJM setup, using the analogue inputs is retarded and actually more work for less reward than using the S/PDIF lines. The digital gains are completely, well, digital, and thus aren’t prone to hot-signal wear. An analogue gain circuit can get worn out from an overloaded signal, but a different pattern of 1’s and 0’s isn’t going to make the DSP/SRC go all SHODAN on you.
