I wipe the any ear gunk off before I stick them back in the box if that’s what you mean.

I wipe mine off and typically will hit them with an alcohol swab every few days or so. But I have issues with ear infections sometimes.
I’ve actually lost more hearing to inner ear infections than I have to DJing, playing guitar, going to shows/clubs, or being a competitive rifle shooter. But I don’t think I did any of that without earplugs…not in a long time.
In relation to the drivers + ear defenders mod there already are some products made for this purpose.

I’ve been a drummer for 6 or 7 years now and just recently started getting into DJing. Dad was/is a drummer and always stressed the importance of hearing protection to me and my brothers.
I never practice without these or something similar and always gig with plugs. I’ve thought about using these for DJing but haven’t gotten around to finding the 3.5mm converter so I can try them with my laptop. They sound pretty decent while drumming but as I said, never tested them with any sort of electro. The fact that they kill 24db though is quite nice and even after a really loud practice session my ears feel fine.
As for comfort, they feel amazing, even after up to an hour or so. I haven’t used them longer than that but I can’t imagine they would suddenly start to be uncomfortable and even if they did, all it would take to fix would be a little adjusting.
We also have a couple pairs of these http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/accessories/detail.asp?value=007J&cat_id=126&type_id=41525&content=deluxe-hearing-protector-shooting-accessories. While they don’t take off quite as many decibels, they are equally comfortable and would be excellent for the driver mod.
Never used to use plugs and am regretting it now, the stupid things we use to do when we where young.

ER20s if you’re not wearing them with headphones, those alpine ones if you are.
i use the sennheiser hd 25 headphones… which alpine ones?
Just look for musicians ear plugs made by alpine. Nice and small so they fit under your headphones.

im on my second pair of music safe pro’s, but i also have ones by acs as a back up. the stem is a bit long to wear under headphones though

#2 on this. i use ER20s for clubing and alpines under the headphones at gigs. i like the sound of the ER20s better but i just equalize my headphones to make the alpine ones sound great.
Have a pair of alpines don’t like them, don’t use them. Simple as.
Yeah they ain’t the best but using ER20s with headphones = stabbing yourself in the ear canal
Just an hour ago, I picked up a pair of custom molded ER-15s from Sensaphonics - In Ear Monitors - Custom Molded In Ear Monitors | Sensaphonics
I’m wearing them with Sony MDR-V700s over them right now with no discomfort. The frequency response on these is great. I’m using them for a gig this weekend. I’ll post back with how they worked out.
Been curious about plugs for some time… I’ve been lucky enough that in the 15+ years I’ve been DJing without them I’ve always kept volume levels under control such that my hearing hasn’t suffered. As of late though I am finding it is more difficult to keep volume under control.. mostly because our audiences are going deaf themselves and thus desire higher and higher sound pressure levels…
Many mixers have weak headphone amp stages so I wonder if its feasible to rock a set with plugs and cans… any thoughts on that?
