Dubstep?

Respectfully disagree. I really like dubstep and think it goes well in a mix with Rap.

I am with the OP.

What I don’t understand is how people dance to it. When I think of dancing, I think of gettin down with my lady, gettin close and going in and out of dancing with her and letting her dance.

Dubstep seems like someone with parkinsons decided to get up on the dance floor. Case in point

(edit: the internet ruined me a long time ago)

I’d have to disagree with DJfrogstars post. to you it may sound like complete shit but that’s just a personal preference dude

Thanks, I laughed and now we’re both going to hell.

we will be in great company. cheers

Nothing wrong with a good skank. And no one dances to dubstep like that girl.

I was introduced to Dubstep by Mary Anne Hobbs’ radio special on BBC. It’s called Dubstep Warz (2006) and it is considered by a significant few to be one of the genre’s breakthrough events (hell, I still have it on my PC). This show was the first I heard of Skream, Benga, Coki, and Kode 9. I remember that what grabbed me was the BASS. Anyway, here is a link to the show.

As has been said, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all formula for a Dubstep sound. I too like the combination of Dubstep and certain Hip-Hop styles (spoken word styles work best to me) but there are a ton of “purists” in the UK who absolutely hate it. Different strokes for various folks. Here is an example of a great mashup of the two - this lives on my iPod.

Finally, if you want to experience a live Dubstep mix show over the interwebs, there is a crew out of LA called Bombadub that host a weekly Friday slot on sub.fm (8-10 PM PST). It’s also carried over UStream and they are big with interacting with the video camera and IRC chat as the show is playing. Check them out here.

Sift around a bit before deciding whether this sound is for you or not. There are a lot of sub-styles but one thing is for certain - Dubstep emphasizes sub-frequencies that you can feel more than you can hear and that does strange but great things to the human body. Not trying to sound corny at all - I am actually reading a book that goes into harmonics frequencies and such.

Ok I’m sorry this is not supposed to turn into a I hate Dubstep VS. Dubstep Rulezzz (Yes 3 z’s :stuck_out_tongue: ) Kinda thread. I was simply looking for more insight into the genre. All music has it’s merits and none can really to be said to be better than the other it’s all in how we hear it. Thanks everyone for the constructive posts many have helped me broaden into some new sounds and music I would have avoided. I still don’t care too much for most Dubstep but I do realize there is some out there I could enjoy. Thanks.

have you checked outt stuff that isn´t that filthy? something like:
appleblim, clubroot, burial, el-b, shackleton etc. this is more athmospheric stuff.
at home i just listen to such kind of dubstep, but when gooing to the club i love the filthy stuff…
2 cents

brown note.

It’s something that I honestly feel needs to be heard out live, or on a very good sound system. Out of all of my friends? I’m the dubstep guy. Some of my friends who have been into EDM for awhile, they have their own things. It seems like for me, I’ve been waiting for something like dubstep for awhile. I used to listen to UK Garage back in the day, and I’ve been feeding off jump-up DnB for awhile now. Dubstep is just what I was looking for.

It’s NOT for everyone, but I think it takes an interesting way of going about it. The drums do not MOVE the music persay, the bass does and “in-between” does. And that’s a complete flip on most styles of EDM.

I never said I didnt like it…
I mean who doesnt like taking a dump after 3 days.
Iver heard amazing bass machinegun sessions of the whole range of dubstep. There wasnt a drink or anything that could sit on a table without wobbling off.
Ive been around and heard quite a bit of bass in my time from all genres…
I just think the music itself is not as special as most people make it out to be… I mean how many chances do the new kids get to experience a full on 1994 jungle party..They dont because that movement has evolved and mabey a retro night will give you the same effect but people were saying the same thing… OMG the SUB BASS!!! WOW!!! this isnt house music or trance or whatever… Thats what made breakbeat and jungle so special when it first came out… Now in the middle of all the electronic music styles .. another 6 year old genre is pushing the speakers all over again… but the focus is just trying to be the baddest wobble in town.. which is not a bad thing.. but the whole OMG THIS IS DUBSTEP is just where the scene becomes deaf to critics.

I’m pretty torn about Dubstep recently. I’ve listened to dubstep for quite awhile and I really like a lot of it. I don’t know if its the music elitist/snob in me, but it’s sudden spike in popularity (In America) is getting slightly annoying.

I was DJing a basement party last night in a college town and even before I had started (I was still setting up) kids were coming up and saying “yo you gotta play some dubstep!” and random people yelling out “DUBSTEP” … And I don’t even know these people and I know they don’t know who I am, they don’t even know what type of music I play and they are asking me for dubstep.

I was pretty thrown off at first, but I did end up playing some dubstep throughout the set. It was fun to be able to play some dubstep and it be accepted, but it still kind of irked me about all the kids jumping on the dubstep bandwagon.

+1
Thats whats odd about dubstep… is the speed in which it became more of the next gen trend pop underground for clueless. Not saying people cant enjoy it for the first 20 songs before they figure out that the next 500 tracks all have the same sample. Almost like the AMEN or Funky drummer sample…
at the end of the day its just another EDM sidenote

I quite disagree that it’s a sidenote, by far. If you’ve noticed the evolution of all genre’s of music since dubstep has really “hit the scene” if you will, there’s a lot more of a big bass sound across the board.

I think it’s a particular flavor people enjoy, rather than knocking the old flavors, it’s just something new and refreshing. Some people will only like it for a bit, and then move on. While others will stick to it forever. Nothing to be said except for personal tastes.

I had a similar experience with 2 step garage. And minimal.

I wasn’t a DJ at the time, just a raver, but I could never work out what I was supposed to dance to.

Excellent example of Dubstep that isn’t dirty.

Haha quite funny that you mention high rankin. Cause he was the first dj ever who damaged the monitors in the booth at a frequenzeinlauf-party. He defo dropped some of the hardest tunes i’ve heard back in '09

Some great dubstep I think. Pretty good incorporation of the song here

Found myself with a spare half our at the Big Chill this year, and wandered into see Appleblim in one of the tents - really enjoyed it to be fair, though I was about 15 years older than most ofthe people in there

Burial is also quite fantastic (especially when staggering back from a club through a city at 4am)

Still wouldn’t play it regularly out though od tracks might make it onto my show …
