Effects you can't live without.

Effects you can’t live without.

Hello fellow DJTT’ers,

Finally I feel like I can get more involved in the general discussions! It’s been a week since I’ve gotten my S4 and my 3rd day with getting to the hang of Traktor (it’s super easy!).

So the most brief background about myself: I’m a Serato DJ (or was). I’ve been on a 57TTM 2-channel for the last 3 years, and when it comes to effects, I use none. The only creative aspects that I took advantage of Serato for were it’s looping capabilities and loop roll. I guess you can say I wasted my 57 a bit by not getting into the FX side of things, but to be honest, I never really needed to add much more. Also, I like to use things that are tried and tested, and Serato never had much of a reputation for FX.

Now that I have Traktor, I want to start testing and seeing how effects can be incorporated into my own sets.

I wanted to ask you guys and girls out there what effects in Traktor (or outside as well, if you are using it in conjuction with Traktor) you simply could not live with out. My hopes are that after reading some of the ways you use your effects, and why you couldn’t do without them, that other users like myself will get inspired to try some new things.

So far I’ve been really loving the Gater effect (as it’s super obvious and cool). However it seems a little hard to use well. It also seems like it would get overplayed or overabused if not used carefully.

What do ya’ll think?

Definitely the Delay and it’s freeze button

Whyte, what kind of music do you play? What part of the track are you using it in, and how are you using it?

Yeah, it sounds so good I have to try to make sure I don’t use it on every mix.

freeze button
beatslicer
beatmasher
gater

its all good

Tech-house, techno, whatever i feel like. It’s really great in using it to make your own buildups and climaxes. Use together with an iceverb, build them both up.. get a huge climax going in 2 records.. BAM hit de freeze on track 1, track 2’s climax slams in and the crowd goes wild .

Delay, reverb but most importantly : the xone filter.

eq, delays and filters.

does anyone actually use the TT FX?

I use filters, echo freeze, beatmasher and slicer, sometimes the formant filter.

Eq, filters, and delay.

I do! If you press rewind, and fiddle with the volume making sure it doesn’t go too high, it makes for a great sounding effect.

I enjoy mapping a single control to do a few things at once. Like selecting a delay speed, gate clipping the signal and leaving a trail off delay. Or mapping different FX that are triggered at the end of build ups when changing the loop size with buttons. Gater FX plus Distortion, or Gater plus Iceverb. All these things with a single knob or button.

I also come from using Ableton and Reaktor A LOT. I really love the Finger, and Buffeater as a post effect. Routing Traktors master out to these Reaktor Plugs is a lot of fun. For example, instead of just dropping out the sound via faders, using the Finger or Buffeater to produce a similar result just with various FX. Stuff like bit crushing, high pass filters, granular stretching etc…

I really wish Traktor would implement post fader FX, and incorporate a similar idea to Seratos smart knobs, or Live’s FX Racks. It would be nice to be able to customize stuff a bit more. I quit routing Traktor through Live, and I really miss the ReDux fade effect. I forget who actually made it, but it’s beautiful for fading out of tracks. TOTALLY ADDICTIVE.

Sick… at work right now, but will definitely give a listen when I get home!!

Hey so regarding the xone filter (I think you’re talking about the 92 filter? HP/LP?), is there anyone out there who can comment on how this HP/LP filter would compare to the filter on the S4? The filter on the S4 has been awesome for me, and it’s also the right sized knob for this kind of filter. But you never kno… I don’t really know, but is it possible to choose what kind of filter you want, as well as the EQs?

T3 Delay, Reverb and Filter

i’m quite a fx junkie

eq, delay, freeze, masher, slicer, gater, lofi, drive, sometimes reverb and filter of course.

delay, reverb, filter.

I sometimes use gator – meh.

But the IceVerb, which is just another type of reverb is cool too. I just hate switching thru effects. I like having 1 or 2 dedicated buttons to get me to some instant effects and just use those.

Does anybody knows about creating your own effects with Pure Data?

I’m learning PD and Max/MSP right now and creating some VSTs in the future, but i’m wondering if how to make VST1’s to import to VDJ as it only supports them.

So what did you think bro:wink:?

I use the TT FX! You can have it at the end of an FX chain, so you can have a buildup and then slam the TT FX, slam the dry/wet to zero, then have the track drop.
