so… what software do u guys use for doing a gig?
what software would u guys recommend purchasing?
Most of us here are on Traktor (Scratch) Pro, Serato is the main competitor. Ableton’s a very powerful alternative (more production-, less dj-minded), and the latest VDJ release doesn’t seem to be that bad either.
I recommend Traktor for DJ’ing

ive mucked around with Djay, VDJ, ableton and Traktor (serato a lil bit, not enough to make an assesment on it).
they all have their pros and cons
DJay- good starter program to learn how to “mix” what songs sound good and what not. gets very limited very quickly in what you can do with it
VDJ - decent program, i just didnt personally like the layout so didnt take it much further (overlaid wav forms are pretty sweet and made beatmatching incredibly easy)
Ableton - FANTASTIC program. very complicated but you can do basically anything with it - my drawback is that dj sets with live are very “structured” and dotn feel like true sets to me. but remixing/producing in that software is incredibly fun/intuitive. plus you can edit video as well as audio…/3rd party vsts can expand anything you wanna do in that program
Serato - didnt play much with it. wasnt bad. deff would consider it more if i was on CDJs/ TTs – the bridge is huge – having a live layout in a DJ GUI would be fantastic (Ive linked live and traktor.. but it can be shaky/not having everything infront of you – without an external monitor can get hairy in a live setting)
Traktor - Great for midi. powerful interface/awesome efx, like the layouts of the wav forms and felt more like a dj program should (compared to DJAY, VDJ, LIVE)- my personal choice for mixing
everyones gonna have their preferances and gonna like differnt software more than others… so try em out and see which one fits your style and what you wanna do

Serato Scratch Live, cd timecodes are free online on the rane site and vinyl timecodes are avail for 10$ each. Most clubs have a Rane mixer/box to use SSL here in the states.
Kinda depends how and what you DJ I guess.
I only just switched from Traktor Pro to Ableton a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it! So flexible. And, I’d say ABleton is seen as the best as Ean Golden even mentioned in one of his Traktor Pro 2 videos that the sample decks allow for Traktor Pro to almost catch up with Ableton’s ability in having lots of loops and flexibility etc.
Been on Ableton for a few years now and barely scratched the surface of what can be done with it and learn something new pretty much every week wether its through my own experimenting or through the seemingly endless flow of tutorial vids from the likes of Dubspot et al.
Can easily take what you’ve made in your bedroom/studio and perform live with it too.

I’ve used Djay and Traktor Pro in a performance setting and use Live for all my production.
I’m dissuaded from ever trying to DJ with Ableton just because of the sheer amount of work you have to do to prep all of your tracks properly. I am looking into integrating Live for acapellas, though, so I could warp an acapella and drop it over whatever else I’m doing in Traktor.
Djay is great beginner software, I’d almost recommend people start there because it is so simple. You’re going to learn the basics and not get distracted by effects or 4 decks or any of the more advanced temptations of Traktor.
From personal experience, I think Traktor offers way more flexibility and features then Serato.

honestly anything that you like works. get demos, try stuff. rock with it.

their tracking resolution is godly.
I seriously swear I read somewhere that he picked up a Traktor Kontrol s4, hence my post. If he did, why the hell would you use anything other than Traktor? Especially since the S4 was made to fully control Traktor.

I swear they have a 1k resolution, the same as serato. And an increased resolution isn’t always better. Higher resolution = better at low speeds, lower = better at high speeds.

Use Traktor thats about it.. Have used ssl and vdj. Taught vdj was okay found ssl very limiting. Vdj was very good as a beginners software very self explaining. Took me longer to get used to Traktor but have never looked back.
Would never use Ableton have nothing against people who dont i just find all that preparing very boring and stops me being spontaneous.
Its quite clearly a 2k res. How on earth would a higher resolution be worse at high speeds.

Yes there are other eliments involved, however both companies encoding aint to differnt so that is going to be negligable
