First DIY Project - Advice Needed

I want to add a footswitch to my Traktor rig. Unfortunately, I can’t find anything suitable. I want something small, quiet and durable with a USB or MIDI connection that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

I have a Boss FS-5U which I use with my Kontrol S4 and I love it. I’d like to have a similar device (or two) for my shift modifiers. My current thinking is a dual CV-to-MIDI footswitch converter would be my best bet. MIDI Solutions sells one but it costs £125 (about $200). More than I want to spend.

I’ve now come across an Arduino-based board that offers more functionality - more inputs + USB and MIDI connectivity - for £40 (roughly $65). The details can be found at this link:

Apart from building a PC, I have never done any DIY stuff before. I can borrow a decent multimeter, some tools and soldering iron but I have no electronics experience nor have I ever soldered before. But, hey, how hard can it be? Hehe.

So, is this project suitable for a complete beginner? And, if so, what other stuff would I need to create my converter box? Any suggestions would be really welcome!

my advice, buy yourself a 4$ game controller on ebay, rewire the buttons you need (up to 16 switches depending on the game pad) download rejoice+ midiyoke, and map them in traktor(wich is easy with the learn button)

Not sure of this one…

Already tried that one, liked it but never find a good use for

DJKeyWee, you must be psychic. As it happens, I had an FCB1010 with the firmware upgrade but I sold it on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t need all the functionality plus it was too big and cumbersome to carry around.

As for the USB pedal, I was watching one on eBay but then I discovered it doesn’t work with Mac OS X 10.6 and also it sounds like an industrial staple gun. Shame. It seemed ideal.

I’m set on a CV-to-MIDI converter because I love the action of the Boss-style switches. I also like the idea of making something myself. The only real question is whether the project I have in mind is suitable for a beginner.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

i made a foot peddle with a 1/4 inch jack for my home made midi fighter and behringer keyboard it works well. but you could use the same concept with say, a gamepad or even an adrunio.

buy the boss switch that you like the feel of, buy something the computer recognizes as midi, replace the button on that midi controller by a 1/4 jack female connector, (like the one in the back of your boss pedal) and plug your pedal, and voila!
