cdjs for me. if theyre in good condition
s4. i choose functionality over “industry standard”
S4, especially since I don’t have a mixer.
I’d take the CDJ’s myself,
unless the S4 is something you want really bad. Midi controllers are comming up all over the place these days.
I think if your just starting out, you should start from old school to build a foundation.
There are so many functions on the S4 I wouldn’t even know how to start.I look at it as too much over head. However, I base this on the way I learn. You may be different.
I started on the midi controllers and now I’m on my way to cdj’s. I’d say your going end up trying out all playing fields. Due to this, I’d go with the standard.
where did you find them? i wanna sell my mk2s and maybe upgrade to mk3s or just sell my mk2s and run x1 & maschine…
taking in to consideration if you have a powerful laptop or not would be something to look at
If you got the money… S4
HID, works a lot better than regular MIDI ![]()
thing is, I enjoy beatmatching on traditional style decks as much as I like controllerism.
I’ve already got a nice little midi setup so I’m leaning towards the CDJ’s… 'specially at the price I’ve found 'em (almost half price)
then fully test them before taking them home, price seems just too low
well they’re 2nd hand so it’s fairly normal to pay ~50% of the RRP?
take the cdj’s man.
especially at that price. but as others said, make sure you test the hell out of it. dont forget ANY feature the 1000’s have.
Take the S4. More functions means more creativity if you’re up to it. “Industry standard” sounds icky in my ears. Why limit yourself if you can do more with your gear?
I have an S4 and have owned CDJ’s…It’s a toss up, if you want to be the cool new kid get an S4. If you want ole’ reliable which has been road tested get the cdj’s. Honestly at that price it’s a steal, CDJ’s feel great!
Edit: You know what…after thinking for a few, the S4 (if you already have a laptop) is a hell alot of fun. You can mix just like cdj’s if you want and it’s like tossing in a djm-800 also. You do not need to press sync ever (although I love it!), you can use the S4 just like a traditional setup and the feel of the unit is excellent.
Come to the Darkside…We have cookies!
WHY THAT QUOTE IS A TOUCH INCORRECT
tbh there is some cool shit that can be done with the cdjs if you fiddle enough.
one of the tricks i’ve always loved is turning on key lock, switching the pitch to 100% and ramming it down to -90% region, the sound glitches like fuck. great way to to take an acapella out of a mix.
or a build up out of a track when bringing in next one, take a 1 beat loop and hammer the pitch bend on jogs faster to create a build before the break or drop on next track, or hold it playing the loop til the drop and slow it right down with jogs, with a bit of delay or echo.
or pair them up with an efx1000 and you almost got the same abilities as traktor.
something i don’t see/hear done much with the echo feedback loop, is that while you have a loop ‘sampled’ you can still play through it from the cdj if you tweak with wet/dry as a x-fader. so you can take 2 loops of same song and do a kind of remix, or mash up with 2 different songs.
i had 2 efx500s, one for each cdj - linked direct to the units and then to the mixer…
your only limited by own imagination on any set-up. find ways to bend the kit to your needs
however…
i switched to traktor/vci to do all this in one unit that uses less space. alot of my workflow and mapping is based off of things i used to do with cdjs. just now i have a few more options and tricks ![]()
decided to get neither and continue with my custom controller instead! (see sig)
can u post a link to the cdj’s then? ![]()
Should I get one of these…
…or one of these?
Talking our your ass man. Both are good, just more suited to different things.
