getting the right controller to start producing

getting the right controller to start producing

hi all.i got reason 3 and looking round for a usb controller to start me off producing.Any ideas whats value for money???

I use a novation remote SL compact 49, not the cheapest, but just found it on DV247.com for £169.99, which is a bargain! I use it with Logic and its brilliant, if Novations are a bit out of your price range try m-audio’s oxygen range - depending on budget and number of keys you require

ye looked that up on htfr and there looking at 219.The price u mentioned is the kinda price rang im looking at.Is that controller user freindley for reason 3???

Novation do quite a few different products so check out their site, see what suits your needs.
They also have the benefit of a program called automap which basically sets up your midi controller for you. I assume it works with version 3, but you may have to do a little digging to find that out, they have specified reason as compatible, but not stated which versions

cool will check that out.WHAT about the korg microkontrol or microkorg?

the microkorg is a hardware synth… the micro kontrol does control software, but might be a little expensive f you just want a midi controller.

so its looking like the novation then as there not much more worth talking about???

There are many basic controllers out there.. 25 49 or more keys if required.

The reason integration of the Novation Remote Series is awesome. It works straight out of the box with a very thoughful layout.

Mate, just get a cheapo 2nd hand midi keyboard with maybe a few dials, a pitch bend and maybe a mod wheel. If you’re new to production you wont need more then that. you can pick sumink up for like $100 if that. Most people start with a PC and a mouse.

I have a novation Xiosynth.
It’s a soundcard/MIDI Controller/Onboard 300 voice synth engine/Battery Powered/USB Powered/MIDI over USB/countless other things.
A great little device.

don’t get anything expensive man, look on craigslist, you can use any random keyboard as long as it has midi. im sure you can find something that will suit your needs perfectly for under 25 dollars. or if you want something new, m audio makes a range of cheap good quality midi controllers for under 100. When i first got into producing, i made the mistake of blowing a whole paycheck on one of those microkontrols, before i even knew how to use it. five years and 3000 dollars of gear later, im back to using only a mouse. go figure. the worst part about audio gear is it loses alot of value when you want to sell it.

novation 25 sl mk2 FTW!. Love it! It will last you years and you wont ever be thinking what if I had got something else like you would if you settled for something cheaper…
Automap is incredible for producing and speeds things up no end…

I’d highly recommend the korgNano series for someone starting off. I recently went from keyboard and mouse to the korgNano series, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s also modular, which is something I preferred.

There are some better keyboards out there than the korgNanokey but if you’re looking to just start off, it’s money well spent. And the nanoPad and nanokontrol are really great, inexpensive pieces of equipment.

Rather than the Korg-Nano, take the Akai-Keys. They have better keys than the Korg. I’d take the Oxygen8V2- you can use it as both a controller to produce and as a controller for Traktor.
I’m using mine with my Maschine and its wonderful.

the novation remote automap is implemented beautifully in reason.
