Lay Down Sally, I know why that popped into your head. Dirty old man!! ![]()
One of the greatest musicians ever. One of the few musicians where I can put on any of their records/cds and listen to it all the way through and not get disgusted or bored.
I still remember the first time I heard “Layla” on the Unplugged Album, I was like 10 at the time and man from that point on I’ve loved me some Clapton ever since.
I could never really get past Clapton being a flaming racist yet playing black styles of music in a more paletable form for white consumption. Contradictions make my head hurt…
@gooch, I know what you’re referring to. AFAIK, it was only said once and he was so high on god knows what that he barely knew who or where he was. I know that doesn’t excuse it, but the guy toured with Billy Preston right up 'till Preston’s untimely death. And, uhh…he plays blues. There’s an explanation no one was told, I’m sure…probably something to do with ridiculous amounts of drugs.
@bartboy…don’t take this the wrong way, but I hate your opinion. It’s yours; you’re entitled to it, so keep it.
But IMO, Clapton didn’t make a good recording until he got clean and the acoustic version of Layla was one of the worst musical abortions I’ve ever heard…such an amazing story for an awesome song with all of the musicianship and more importantly all of the soul squeezed out of it. I like to pretend it never happened. Then again, I almost feel the same way about the original album recording too.
Seriously, the old Yarbirds, Derek & the Dominos, Cream, and Blind Faith stuff is hard to listen to…plus the Pilgrim album was one of the worst atrocities Phil Collins has been responsible for, and that is saying something considering the BS he’s pulled and the fact that some of the songs on Pilgrim are up there with my favorite Clapton songs (River of Tears, She’s Gone, etc.). Part of it was the recording techniques when the albums came out; part of it was really lousy producers (like that worthless hack, Phil Collins); but a lot of it was that Clapton didn’t know where he was half the time. One More Car, One More Rider; Hyde Park; and the recent Creamfields recordings are amazing testaments both to how good Clapton has always been and just how far drugs can go to screw something up.
With the exception of the concert he did with Steve Winwood at Madison Square Gardens last year (I think), he’s better live now than he ever was in a studio…and considering that he was playing from the transition to multitrack recording through the integration of computers…straight over the dominance of Abbey Road in the '60s and '70s…that is saying something.
If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say it at all…nah just kidding I know many many people don’t like or even hate Clapton. That version of Layla or that whole CD isn’t my personal favorites it’s just the first experience I had with Clapton. I understand that he has many faults but I can’t deny he’s one of the greatest guitar players of the last 100 years. I would rate Hendrix and Page a higher but he’s definitely up there.
I’m such a Debbie Downer sometimes…
this started out as a happy song stuck in my head…
f-ers…
Oohhh……
To each his own. I disagree, but…meh.
dude…we’re having an awesome discussion where we disagree about music…respectfully…
Clapton brings out the best in everybody.
i never understood if there is an underlying defintion to the name sally ![]()
