Always loved disco, but always thought playing big room was what you had to do to get booked. With the help of some veteran dj’s I got set straight very quickly on that.
Once I discovered there were places where I could play disco, then it was off to the races!
Disco led into House (good house). House led into Techno. Techno led into trance. But all that time I still play house and disco. Trance led into breaks. Breaks led into Jungle and DnB.
As of right now I really do rotate my mixes online with different genres. It will not be unusual for me to play an all house set on one side of town and then go to a club 10 miles away and lay down an all DnB or Breaks set in the same night.
Personally It brings me the greatest pleasure to play multi genre sets. I need the variation otherwise I get very frustrated. It may not be the best thing to do if you want to create a worldwide name for yourself. But as a regional DJ thats where its at!
Kind of similar to me. Progressive House to Prog Trance (Sasha, Digweed) up until around 2006 when it was getting a bit dark and boring. Also listened to a fair bit of Nu School breaks around this time until it died (where did it go???). Also some Electro between 2006 - 2007 when it was really big - I remember Desyn Masiello and Luke Fair used to drop a fair bit. And then I moved to Nu Disco when that got huge in the last five years, and deep house, and of course still a bit of prog from 2008-2014. Nu disco, deep house and prog mix really well together although it can make your sets sound a bit haphazard.
In the last six months I’ve been inspired by Guy J and decided to commit to Progressive House. It’s the genre I love the most by far, and his stuff has really kicked the genre in the a**. Lost & Found, Guy J’s label, has melody and energy, just the perfect blend.
I’ve been listening to dance music, and basically nothing else, since I was 19, and I’m now 32. I thought I would have grown out of it by now, but I still get shivers listening to a good track or a good mix No other music really does it for me.
At least my wife forces me to go outside that narrow range: she listens to James Blake, Radiohead, a bit of pop etc. Sometimes I like it, mostly I don’t
I used to listen to Brahms & Shostakovich. Now it’s Acid House
Actually my tastes haven’t changed much. I maybe bought some progressive house in the 90’s that sound dodgy today, but the quality House records I still love and I still buy tunes that have kept that same feel, although evolved.
I started to DJ house/breaks/trance back in 1996 and never looked back. My saving grace is that I worked in oldies/classic rock radio so my library of that kind of music is extensive. Once rap turned into hoes and clubs and champagne, I left. I couldn’t get enough of Rage Against the Machine, they destroyed rock music for me. When they slowed down I left rock and pop music. Almost 20 years later dance music still dominates what I have on the speakers. I still can’t get enough. I listen to alot of live sets and am always inspired by some of the newer youngers DJs and their take on the sound of “house music”

and older DJs like John Digweed. He reminds me of Derek Jeter, He is one of the best and shows up every day to play. Doesn’t make alot of noise and always brings his A game.
I used to be obsessed with EDM, was a massive fan of Swedish House Maffia, Thomas Gold, Deorre and so on.. Now 2 years later I’ve moved passed that and now love some big room techno. Seth Troxler, Richie hawtin and Steve Lawler I can never get enough of.
Started off with progressive breaks back in early 2010 (heavily influenced by NuBreed, Hybrid and Lostep), though had exposure to electro house due to a mate who introduced me to the art. Dabbled in electro breaks and sort of swinging around to melodic techno nowadays, as some songs could easily fit into old school progressive house (i.e. not the Avicii et al kind of “prog” house, the early Sasha/John Digweed era), which I used to love way before I started spinning.
No other music really does it for me.
