How has your taste in music and musical interests evolved since you started DJing?
About five years ago I was really into indie music and I kept up with all of the latest indie rock and my tastes were moving towards indie electronica and indie dance type music. Indie dance is what really got me into DJing and then I started getting into some more mainstream mashups, fidget and electro house that overlapped with a lot of indie dance.
Since then my interests evolved into more pure forms of EDM, I had a mainstream progressive house phase which I lost interest in, I had a dubstep and brostep phase which I really got into (and is still fun in moderation), and I’ve gotten into more traditional house music.
Since I have been DJing it is time consuming enough to stay on top of one EDM genre and I have completely lost interest and don’t have time to keep up with much of any indie music or anything that’s not EDM. Occasionally I’ll listen to some of my favorite electronica acts when I see an album come out but it is hard enough to stay on top of a couple house sub genres.
I would say right now my music tastes are starting to mature away from the hyperactive EDM and I am really getting into tech house and I am starting to get into techno a little. Breaking into a new genre is pretty overwhelming though and takes a lot of time.
So how have your music tastes evolved, and as a bonus what are a couple of your current favorite tracks?
Ya sometimes i go back through my music and look through by when they were added and what my favourite track was a year ago compared to today.
I was mostly top 40 until 2 years ago and then all progressive and now more tech house and deep house. going to ibiza and seein illario alicante and mathew dear probably has something to do with it
I dont even bother to keep up with top 40. its too time consuming and i just dont enjoy it
I love the line from the pleasurekraft track. Rose on my brain. cocaine in my dick vein
Lately Ive been listening to mario ochoa and alex kenji alot
Awesome idea for a thread! I had a huge multi paragraph response written out but I accidentaly hit refresh and lost it all . So I’ll just list my 18 years of musical tastes
note: years are just a random guess so they may be a bit wrong…
0-8ish: Raffi, Smash Mouth, Blink 182, Sum 41
8-14: Classic rock and just classic rock. I thought everything else was pure crap.
14ish: Started DJing. My first venture into the electronic scene was with a torrent of “top 100 dance tracks”. After I learned the basics with these terrible songs I got into the world of Breaks. Plump Djs, Stanton Warriors, Krafty Kuts, Freestylers etc…
I also got into Hip-Hop at this point.
15-16: Next up was the notorious Dubstep. I just loved me some Brostep back then… Excision, Datsik, 16 Bit, Cookie Monsta, Borgore to name a few.
Along with Brostep I started getting into “Nu Funk” or “Funky breaks” as it was called then. Bomstrikes and Krafty Kuts’ Insane Bangers were a couple of the record labels I followed.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?) my computer’s hard drive crashed and I lost my huge collection of Brostep.
16-18. So having to start fresh was actually kind of a good thing. I stopped enjoying Brostep and found out there was actually good Dubstep out there. Along with Dubstep I got into Glitch-Hop. Nu Funk evolved into Ghetto Funk and I started to dig the midtempo stuff the most.
Well that was fun… good way to start off a Sunday morning.
When i started to break away from the radio 5 years ago, I listened to Hardstyle and a little bit of trance, and a side of old school hip-hop.
My breakaway song from trance was Faxing Berlin by Deadmau5, which introduced me into progressive house, and from there I became full EDM, shifting more to the Electro/French Electro stuff in the last year. That’s been me for the past 3 years, but I still love my progressive tracks.
Now I’ve started to do some more exploring into Dubstep, but without wobbles. I still listen to the occasianal Brostep song.
Songs I love right now:
The dubstep, which I’ll occasionally throw hip hop acapellas over
Progressive:
Absolutely love this track! Especially on a big system
While my dad was a tribal house dj for my entire life, i was inspired to start djing by the Richie Hawtin “Sounds From Can Elles” mix when my dad played it in the car on the way home from a long trip up north. It made me the biggest minimal nerd for a while, but since then, i’ve gone through a phase with dnb, dubstep, and chillout/electronica, but lately, I feel like i’ve finally found where i belong with deep techno and house. Generally, its somewhere in between Radioslave and Carl Craig type techno and house, though i also play some Jamie Jones/Seth Troxler type stuff every now and then.
my taste in music hasn’t changed at all, i was a huge dance music fan for years before i got into djing.
the only real difference is i’m way more on top of edm music than i used to be. i dig more and dig deeper for tracks. i keep myself updated on new releases and trends on the daily.
i guess technically that means i listen to dance music more than i do other genres, but it’s not because i’m any less interested in those genres - it’s just a time/priority thing.
Well I was exposed to a large swath of music when I was young. Everything from CCR to the JBs and everything in between. Once I started DJing at ~16 my deep love was towards hip-hop and r&b. When I was doing larger sets it had to gravitate to a little more pop/dance because of the crowds and their demands.
I am still mostly into hip-hop and r&b, but I am branching out into more of the funk era where most of the samples reside. I may do some experimenting since I am trying to get back into DJing as at least a part time career, but something tells me I will always be focused on my true love of hip-hop and r&b.
pretty much went from EDM to punk and back to EDM. I mostly liked trance when I started and still do a lot. I have evolved to play more progressive house, and electro though as playing trance is difficult in the US. Finding places that want you to play trance is pretty rare.
