How Do I Begin Mixing?
I’m 15 and unemployed, and DJing is really interesting me. I’ve always loved electronic music whether that be House, Progressive House, Dubstep, Drum and Bass, or even Hardstyle Techno.
So, how should I start?

First step…gets money by finding yourself a job

Okay, then what?
Oops, sorry about that..
Man…you guys are dicks.
On zero budget…I assume you have a computer, some kind of speakers (computer speakers work) and some kind of headphones (anything works…good starts at $100). If that’s the direction you want to go, my suggestion is to buy an NI Audio 2. It comes with Traktor LE and lets you run different audio to your speakers and headphones, which is kind of the important part of DJing. Learn/play with the mouse, and if you like it…start saving.
Well my post was being helpful imho
With this he can blend and mix, though I would leave mashing those beets to the first mixer
Nadastrom performs with SSL without timecode…it’s possible to beat match with the computer keyboard (which I think Traktor LE will do)…or at any rate, Sync does work if you set your beat grids.
The last thing you want to do is start buying expensive gear and later realize that DJ’ing is not for you.
However, if you think your parents can spare a couple hundred dollars for you, I’d suggest getting the Traktor Kontrol S2 and experiment with it. But I doubt any parent would want their child to get into DJ’ing because DJ’ing is associated with social experiences that are not viable for a 15 year old.
TIP: GET A JOB IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO DJ’ING!
I wanted to get into DJ’ing when I was in high school but didn’t want to spend my parent’s money because they didn’t want to support such a hobby/interest. So I started to teach high school and jr. high school students as a private tutor. Ultimately, it pooled in enough money for me to get my first pair of turntables and mixer.
You should start small and build your way up in regards to equipment since DJ hardware/software does not come cheap…unfortunately.
I suggest that you try Virtual DJ on your computer if cash is tight. It doesn’t necessarily require you to have any equipment. Just a computer with the proper specifications and music that you want to play.
This will help you understand the basics of DJ’ing.
Also, check out your local Guitar Center or music store to check out their DJ section. You can always go there and check out the equipment in person. You can also talk with the guys there about the equipment they have available. Play around and enjoy.
if you´re really short on cash. dl a demo of traktor, serato, virtual dj. there are even some decent free dj software comapnies. like mixxx. map some essential functions to your keyboard, get urself a cheap usb interface (audio2 will do the job perfectly) and you are ready to go!
Do this. I got a trial of VDJ and I was instantly hooked.
Check out a numark 2 go price tag under 50 and comes with software
Will get ya going with basics it lacks eq controls is only downside but I think for learning on a super low budget would be a worthy route.
The other one I can recommend for cheap and half decent build quality is the numark total control I’m not sure on pricing but I own one and have had it since its introduction.
The traktor map it comes with is ok but I use one I found on the ni forums that’s far better
It’s an expensive hobby, and doesn’t pay well for the most part so you will need a job. You can start by hacking around with VDJ but its really hard to get a feel.
I was lucky enough to get a job at a disc jockeying service that does Weddings, some club work etc but they were willing to train new hires. Guy who trains me is signed ot a label and does some large clubs here so I’m lucky to have ag reat teacher and the workplace supplies the gear. See if theres a disc jockey outfit near you that actually does things like beat mixing and club djing and not just jukebox wedding services (Feels like its one in a million though)
Get yourself an entry level controller. Check out the Numark Mixtrack Pro $249 or the Vestax Typhoon $299 both of them come with virtual dj and work with Serato DJ Intro available for free on Serato.com
In Freq’s defence, thread is called how do i begin mixing, then the OP tells us about his musical tastes, then he asks where to start.
Sorry.
My advice, start saving, and don’t buy the first thing you can afford. That’s going to take a while, so download the demo of mixxx, Virtual DJ, and Traktor. Play with all 3, and figure out which one you like the best (despite what any of us tell you). Learn that program well. You can use a plain computer keyboard to control everything on the screen. But not well. You should also be reading up on anything and everything in this forum. Any question you have, search it. If its not there, ask. There is lots of information on how to use the software.
Once you have money saved up $800-1000, buy some gear that you have researched a lot. Either controllers, cd players or turntables, and put what you learned in the software to use.
Then, practice any chance you get.
Then you are old enough to be working and you will amass gear until you have a production studio, full DJ booth (with lasers), and a shelf of equipment that You haven’t touched in months and never will again because you got something waaaaaaay better. All of this will be in the extra bedroom. Its fun ![]()
