How do you find EDM events?

I just moved from San Francisco to Chicago, and know little about the EDM scene here. San Francisco has spoiled me with sfedm.com. I’ve been scouring facebook.com and going.com, and I now know of a few venues that I’ll be checking out. Regardless, I figure this could be a good topic of conversation:

Assuming you know nobody in a new city, how do you find EDM events?

You are braver than me!

This and DJForums are a good place to start.

Also, why don’t you see the gig lists for your favourite DJs and find the places they are playing in Chicago?

RA is good. They do a newsletter every Thursday called Local Mailer with stuff going on in your area.

www.residentadvisor.net

Chalk one more for RA. I don’t know how useful it is in the US of A but here, you can’t not know about an event with a high profile lineup. Most definitely overshadows the smaller gigs thrown by/with locals though.
It’s gotta be a good starting point for a big town like Chicago.

TranceAddict - Electronic Dance Music Forums and go to the regional areas. This will have a party planner for the larger cities.

I used to think that EDM was an awful term because it meant nothing.
How I realise that it’s an awful term because it means everything.

As deejays it is our responsibility to sort this shit out. Trying to put music in its own tiny little pigeon-hole is our job, nobody else’s.

[/OT rant]

edm is the preferable umbrella term over techno.

jussayin its the lesser of 2 evils

EDM the preferred name for what above techno?

Techno is the lesser preferred name for what below EDM?

I know if I go to a ‘techno’ night and it’s not actually techno or any or its myriad sub-genres I’d be annoyed.

But if I go to an EDM night; what, precisely, am I going to be listening to?

It just really bugs me that this is still the prevalent term in the city that was the crucible from which house emerged.

Besides from google/facebook/myspace searchs i suggest you go to a pub/bar near an University or High School and start asking for some cool places to listen EDM, drink and get ladies
Be sure to have some cards with you to promote yourself to the right people
Face to face comunication with a stranger is a must-have skill to any DJ :sunglasses:

my point was techno is a word used by people who dont know better, and its used to refer to anything computer made. usually in a bad way.

back on topic. feel free to start a new thread on the usage of the word(s) though

what quigs meant to post at the end there was

For me its mixmag, facebook and word of mouth from other DJs.

I actually get the email subscriptions to some of the ticket selling websites. I do actually read them for some of the bigger names coming around, because at least here in the Boston area, if you don’t buy early, you aren’t going.

I also keep on top of a local promoter/dj forum (for New England it’s newraveorder.com ) to see a lot of the “smaller” shows going around.

I also go to weekly and bi-weekly events on a regular basis, and so get flyers and such from people promoting there.

I also am on facebook, and network with some of the local DJ’s and promoters.

So really, it’s a combination of everything to figure out what’s going on. Honestly, there isn’t a “one-stop” spot to find everything most places (god I wish there was, I’ve thought about trying to compile it… but shoot me now lol). So just do as much as you’re willing to do digging for shows, and you will be rewarded.

hey I live in the chciagoland area!
try clubtix.com and reactpresents. I use those two sites to keep up to date on electronic music happening around chicago.

songkick.com is where i go for most of my concert needs. They are pretty goood about listing concerts. So i just use that and follow the artists that i like and see when they go on tour
