I pad djing

When I’ve seen him spin, he’s used the club’s mixer. So it’s fairly versatile. And I imagine he has a beast mixer of his own at home. Drop Goblin has been in the game for a LONG time. He had another name before Drop Goblin… and made some pretty neat stuff :stuck_out_tongue: (I’ll let you dig to find it though, that’s half the fun!)

So I was watching a video the other day (can’t remember what it was about or anything, but I’ve been searching for it for a while) and towards the end the artist (cant remember who it was either, fairly well known) says he is currently using touchosc mapped to traktor pro for his live setup. Then goes on to show him using just the ipad and throwing down with it, ect…

can anyone tell me who that it or show me the video?

I’m really not understanding your thinking. You don’t want to use a laptop for Djing because too many things can go wrong? An Ipad is just a touchscreen laptop with limitations to what an actual laptop can do. The few DJs that use Ipads don’t use them for everything, usually as a touch deck controller but not for the mixer and everything else. An Ipad is a good backup if your main system were to go down in the middle of a gig but as a real DJ system, its just gimmicky to me not to mention very very limited. You are definitely better off with a laptop running real DJ software and a controller.

ipad is good for djing.. you can buy it and use it. it has great features and i am use it will support you..

i think ipad for djing is sweet.

im planning to combine my ipad with djm 850 and a macbook and perhaps x1 or midifighter.
will be a space efficient setup!

So by the looks of this thread ipads no good for djing.. CDJs not interested at all. Does anyone on here actually use an ipad for djing?

I think the issue virtually everyone has with iPad’s for DJ’ing or live performance is the lack of physical knobs and faders… something you can touch and feel and know it will respond without thinking about it.

No-one likes looking at a DJ who’s more concentrated on hitting the right area of a flat glass object in exactly the right spot than one who can do a half jesus pose as he’s twisting a filter knob while looking you right in the eye with a cocky grin.

For those reasons I reckon few people are willing to adopt to an iPad only setup. The hardware currently does not exist to make it a realistic proposition unless you have 2 pads running completely unlinked separate applications and going though a separate mixer as well so you can knob jockey to your hearts content.

No Doubt there will be a new wave of iPad controllers sooner than later I hope which can utilize the hardware of an iPad coupled with a decent controller and software. Djay is a freaking awesome lil piece of software which gives almost (if not more) as many options as using a CDJ… mix vibes have their app as well which is equally exciting, but like i said .. first wave.

Numark have made inroads to utilizing iPads properly it with their Idj Live… and their new pro model looks like it could have been an absolute game changer if they added faders instead of rotaries and a more “standard” EQ layout(instead they matched the non-standard layout of the software

I felt like screaming “keep it normal and everyone will want one”. instead they fucked with the engomics that DJ’s are used to, and for that reason I think it will fail miserably unless they make serious design changes before release, however they are on the right track IMHO and single versions of this that could be linked or build on the motorized platter of the V7 and they would be unreal and almost suitable for installation if they gave a CD option and USB.

I think the reason for rotaries instead of fader is because that way they can be 2 way without being motorised. If you change the volume on the iPad it’s sent to the controller so there will be no jump in volume when moving the volume on controller.
But I personaly have totaly lost all intrest in intergrating my iPad to my set up. I’ve used it in my setup but you need to consentrat so much in hitting the right spot and tweeking a knob just right is close to inpossible. I tryed the lemur mapping for remix decks and the lack of feeling and feedback made you wonder if you pressed a button or not. iDJ Pro might be as i think the version of Djay has big XY pad and they are perfect for touch screens.

In which case its an even more stupid idea as Djay is only a 2 deck app currently, so all you’d need to do is reset your faders before you play (like every other controller), the Mic and Line-in have separate volume controls on the front (it would almost make sense if they were controlled by the same rotaries)

Who knows maybe theres a 4 deck variant coming which would kind of make sense of the knobs/rings but IMHO 4 decks with 2 volume/jogs and soft-takeover layers just doing it because you can say to everyone “its a 4 deck controller”…which it really isn’t, its still a two deck controller with a shift layer of midi to enable doubling on controls (like those 3 megapixel cameras that pixel upscaled images and called themselves 6mp) However going by the pics, there is no layer latching selector in place either so the big knobs are just there so the LED rings light up?

Rant over, cool idea and a first for iPad DJ’ing just badly executed IMHO.

idj pro looks ok, may take a look at it… thx

New update on scs4dj looks to be good gunna stick with it for a bit i reckon!
