If you’re in the market for studio monitors, look at this thread!

nice find! that´s defo helpful. but in the end going to a store and testing the shit out of studiomonitors is the way to go

+1, but at least we now have a thread/link to give ppl when they post a new thread… probably use it tomorrow or something lol

I’m thinking reputation might actually be a better way to go. GC’s speaker rooms sound like shit. The ones I’ve been in have all the monitors in random positions smashed up against a wall, randomly placed acoustic foam, bass traps sitting in the middle of the room, and untreated walls of glass straight across from the speakers.

Chances are, the ones you think sound best are going to be the ones accidentally placed the right distance apart for wherever you happen to be standing in the room that also happen to have the tweeters withing a foot of ear level. And they’re probably going to be demo’d using an mp3 CD played too loud through a really crappy speaker switcher.

FWIW, I think my next set is going to be dynaudio whenever I have the money……good reputation and no volume control, so I don’t have to worry about bumping it when I control the volume from something else anyway (currently, my interface…by then, either a big knob or a dangerous monitor st if I win the lottery or something).

Im actually shopping for some monitors for my home setup and I found that video very helpful. Thanks!

I am glad you found it helpful, Kosmic has more videos up on Youtube reviewing other gear and studio essentials. I feel like KRK’s are all too often the go to monitor on this forum and I wanted to give people a few more ideas when shopping for the first set. Not saying that KRKs are bad but more information when buying gear never hurt anyone.

KRKs are great for DJing and I only have two pairs of them since I got RP8s for $200 a pair but they are not great studio monitors and you can get better stuff for the price they go for new.

What would you recommend (New Or Used) for a small room in home set up strictly for practicing? anywhere from 6 to 8 inch.

For Djing the KRK Rockit 6 RP2. For production the Yamaha HS-10 or HS-5 with HS-10 sub if you feel the need for the sub. Just my opinion.

if it´s only for djing safe the money and get yourself a decent hifi amp plus hifi speakers. no need to blow that much money only the listen to some mp3s.

Once again, show me a HiFi amp and speakers that provide 80dB SPL of clean audio that’s readily available for less than $300, and I’ll admit there’s no reason so many bedroom DJs on DJF, DJTT, etc. have KRKs.

The last time I tried to use a HiFi amp for anything, the amp blew trying to keep up with my KRKs. Apart from the fact that they had a sub, my RP5s (that I was using as booth monitors) sounded better.

well i don´t turn my amp up way to loud. it´s enough to have a decent sound in my bedroom. 80dB in my room? my neighbors would kill me
i have a pioneer amp A-203 and 2 pioneer CS-3070 monitors. i bought them in 2002 and all in all i payed 200€.

Neither shows up in google shopping, so I’ll assume they were used.

KRK RP5s show up used for 100USD/pair…which is about 75 EUR. Apples to Apples, KRK makes some of the best bookshelf speakers on the planet. Everything I’ve heard that comes close, costs about the same. And none of it is traditional hifi gear.

And, no, I don’t play mine that loud either. But, I’ve also never heard a hifi system that didn’t sound like crap unless someone spent some serious money on it…even at low volumes.

I keep having this argument with a friend, until I just brought my speakers to his house and compared them to his audio engines. KRKs go lower, can be louder, and don’t break up at what I consider normal movie volumes in a large living room. His do.
