Internal Hard Drive Suggestions?

Internal Hard Drive Suggestions?

My Dell laptop is getting a bit old (almost three years now), and rather than wait for my internal hard drive to die on me (probably in the middle of a set), I’m looking to replace it with a new one.

I had been considering the Western Digital 750 GB SATA Scorpio Blue Mobile Hard Drive or the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS Mobile Hard Drive - 500GB, 2.5", 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA-300, OEM. But after reading through some of the reviews, I’m not sure which of the two above hard drive or any other I should consider.

Any suggestions?

Go with the seagate. I don’t trust the Western Digitals

Thanks for the quick reply. Any particular reason why you don’t trust Western Digital?

i have the western digital scorpio and i believe a itajen just picked one up also … no problems with it and it isnt loud or vibrates.
mine for my pc his for his mac.

My suggestion?

Go solid state.
+Reliability, and it will really freshen up that “old” laptop that is starting to feel sluggish.

…I love solid states, lol.

I have an Agility 2, a Vertex 2, one of the newer samsungs, and two HP’s, all 128gb.
But I am weird too.

…Obviously for multiple laptops, and I always replace the optical drive with a second hard drive mod bay…

…and I have one more as a location for my Traktor “live” PC’s disk image backup.

Takes like 15 minutes for windows recovery to mirror my 70gig drive from the ssd through eSATA.

Win.

I have successfully used either Seagate or Western Digital Drives. You say your laptop is getting old. Depending on the model, some of the older Dells tend to run on the hot side. Exokinetic’s recommendation is great if you can afford it. If not, I would probably shoot for a 5400 RPM drive.

I know, but I have very good laptop cooler so that’s not an issue.

I thought about it, unfortunately, a SSHD is a bit much for my budget at this time.
And why a 5400rpm drive instead of a 7200rpm drive?

if you go seagate, STAY AWAY FROM THE 7200.11 SERIES
It has well known problems…I had a 320gb and it crashed on me. Been using a 1tb samsung f3 for several months now. I like western digital, a 320gb wd is my main drive

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ordered the Western Digital 750 GB SATA Scorpio Blue Mobile Hard Drive along with Crucial PC2-6400 800MHz 2GB DDR2 SODIMM Dual Inline Laptop Memory Module.

i would go for the WD Black 750GB, but thats all personal choice for me.

hi there i dont wanna open another thread so im gonna ask this

do you have the 750GB western digital scorpio blue 9.5mm drive? How does it perform in the macbook pro? does it cause any noise or vibration or loss of battery life?

i was deciding between 500GB wd scorpio blue or the 750GB wd scorpio blue (both 9.5mm)

i have heard problems about the 12.5mm scorpio blue drives, just wondering if the smaller 9.5mm ones are better?

Been using a WD 500gb 5400 Scorpio Blue for a year now, 0 issues.

It will affect battery life a bit if you go with higher rpm drives, capacity should’t alter it.

I’ve got a 750GB Scorpio blue on the way. I haven’t heard of any problems.

on the way? please do let us know when you receive them, i want to know if they fit fine and if they generate any noise

I’ve ordered it, and it may well have already arrived at my place in england but I won’t be there til the easter weekend. If all goes well I’ll be able to do my full optibay HDD and SSD swap while I’m there, along with an 8GB RAM upgrade.

i just picked up a 750gb wd scorpio blue and a vertex2 60gb ssd

shit purrs like a kitten

EDIT - i have teh 750 in my optibay (13" Unibody Macbook -2009). isnt overly loud at all - i do find tho that with the 2 drives my battery life drains faster (also heard flash has something to do with it - have about 2hrs of life after i take it off the charger)

Agreed that’s the very same I’m running in both mine

hmm seems like no issues with the WD750GB , i will be picking one on the weekend then

i was also interested in the optibay but i stupidly paid for applecare and it would be pretty silly of me to void my warranty while its still at 2 1/2 yrs~ so im gonna wait a bit before i put optibay haha

Another thing to note. WesDig has Awesome customer support and warranty policy. On the occasion when I have had a drive crash (it happens) the turn around for an RMA was crazy fast. I had a 120gb passport drive crash a few years ago (it was just old) and they sent me a 320gb passport to replace it within 3 days. other then just normal issues from old drives I have had nothing but a good experience with wesdig.

one thing to note if you get a Scorpio black drive is you lose a bit of battery life but the added speed is worth it IMHO. I still get about 5 hours out of my old blackbook (undervolted)

ok so i wont have any problems with the 750GB scorpio blue?

its just that when i did some search on google i came across a lot of forum posts saying they have clicks and the occasional spinning ball pauses, was worried bout this
