New big DJ tool? No, but it might be the new big thing for tool DJs.
Sure you could dedicate a whole page for EQ, but then the only thing you can do with it is adjust the EQ. It’s never going to be able to be used for DJing applications effectively because it wasn’t designed for DJ use. The sound quality isn’t up to snuff, the durability isn’t there (A mixer or CDJ is going to be much better off if something gets dropped on it then a 9 something inch touch screen), etc.
My main problem with the ipad is the same problem I have with the iphone, and any other smartphone type device. When you start trying to do a bunch of things you end up not being able to do any of them well. Same reason why I use a cowon X5L instead of some fancy new smartphone to listen to music.
Right. On that particular page. Of course, there can be many pages. As far as sound quality goes, the iPad can already drive external USB audio interfaces - this is only going to improve with iOS4. We’ve already covered the durability issue earlier.
Again, you’re talking like there is only one way to use an iPad as a DJ, and assuming that the most suitable use case is one of primary equipment. The idea that a tablet couldn’t be used as a controller with a similar purpose to an X1 is plain ignorant. And if developers decide to leverage tablets like the iPad (PROTIP - they already have), then much more targeted use cases open up.
it ain’t what’s happening right now with the ipad/tablets, it’s the future possibilites that are exciting. We’ve just gotta ride the wave of crappy dj apps until all the technology, hardware and software catches up.
I seriously hope NI are considering opening up at least a part of the Traktor API… I’ve got some great ideas for custom DJ controllers that simply aren’t possible with Traktor at the moment
Yeah man, sorry but I can’t get behind Flare. The latency in it is way too high. Tonetable is MUCH more responsive than Flare. Plus, Flare isn’t native to the iPad yet. Tonetable has a clean interface, great pitch control, a re-sizable platter, and multiple timecodes.
“The latency in it is way too high. Tonetable is MUCH more responsive than Flare.”
NOOOOO way. these two are close but Flare is more responsive. It’s Tonetable that still has latency. I think maybe you have the volume too loud with Flare. It does make a difference. It should be set just below half.
can’t say i’m a big fan of the idea of using any touchscreen technology for djing…
way too clumsy of an interface when you need fine precision in the controls… might be fine for some applications, but i’d never trade my rotary knobs and faders in for a touchscreen.
Being able to launch my Ableton clips off my ipad is effin awesome - the grid populates with the clip names - how can that not be cool and incredibly friggen handy ?
sucky part is the fact it has to go over fail wifi
Yeah, but you get that with any digital reproduction of timecode. We’ll agree to disagree here. I’m not at all sold on Flare, and believe me I’ve tested it. I don’t find it nearly as solid as Tonetable.
Hey Bento, what app are you using to control Ableton? Griid or Touchable?
I love my iPad…and DAMN it I was the 1st iPad DJ! I see the iPad as a tool that I can use for djing, plus it awesome while travleling…Netflix, Bejeweled and other apps can be life savers.
All jokes aside. I wish Ableton would come out with a Lite version app. So you could create some music on the road and xfer to you computer to finish the tracks.
There’s Live Lite and Live Intro. Having used both, I really don’t see a reason why you would want to use either of those on the road over the full version. The GUI and layout of the app is 100% identical, just a lot of features are cut out. It’s not that much more resource intensive than the full blown version either.
I will use the iPAD, thats for sure…
I’m thinking about mixing externally and controll with the iPAD all the stuff that I controll now with my Oxygen, wich is big and ugly
There is no better way to controll software specific commands then a touch interface. Do you think that’s nice to browser tracks with rotarys and fixed buttons, and when you want to search by name, why not raise a touch keyboard?
Do you think that’s ok to use led feedback when you can have a touch screen feedback?
Touch interfaces are not the future, they are the present, we are alredy in the early adopters curve of innovations, when the lemmur was presented to the DJ world it was the future coming, but right now, it is the present, come on folks, let’s try not to be laggards this time
