Is the S2 essentially a rookie controller?

Is the S2 essentially a rookie controller?

Hello all,

So to background my question, I’ve been browsing the site for awhile contemplating the purchase of a S2. I’ve been into ableton and producing for about a year now but would like to DJ on the side for fun when I don’t have the longer durations for producing (full time college).

Anyways, it seems like I’m getting this vibe that the S2 is a great product but nothing made for performing outside private establishments. Yes I realize Porter Robinson uses a S4 and others use them at clubs. So I guess what is its main purpose in the end?

And by rookie I’m simply implying that to potentially move onto to larger events you would next a different set up. No offense at all to those who own a S2.

No more than any 2 channel mixer I guess, the parts are the same as the s4. Its just aimed at people who want to mix with 2 decks, it will do alot more, but it was intended to fill that part of the market. I know of quite a few DJ’s who are playing out with S2’s. The size is another reason they are being chosen, and of course the price. I guess 2 decks is really the norm for dj’ing, carl cox being the exception

Its a compact pro level controller. No more or less rookie than any other controller TBH.

Rookies with cash also buy the S4…

As far as the jog/mixer combo controllers, I’ve had the VCI300, VCI100se, and NS7. The S2, to me, is much more advanced than those other controllers. I wish I had loop recorder controls though, but maybe adding an X1 or future X2 will accommodate that feature. I think a right mapping can take care of everything else(more cues, sample etc.)

nº of channels doesn’t equal how “pro” a controller is.

Thanks for your thoughts. I was just curious as to why there sometimes seemed like many opt for CDJs over the more digital route. I’m attached to my mac for ableton a lot so it just seemed logical to go with a S2.

By the general DJ world all midi controllers are “rookie” no matter how many channels there are or how much money you spent on it. But just stick in there guys, we will prevail ! haha
