I've got my first gig coming up soon...

Well, one guy did say something really effin smart after my “set”. This is something I haven’t heard on DJTT yet. Sometimes it’s better to play something that only a few people really like. Because these people will start going nuts for it, and pull the others in with them. That’s what happened, when music was played that the majority of the freshmen didn’t like, the older people would dance, and they’d pull the freshmen in with them. Even though the freshmen didn’t like the music, they still danced, just to fit in with the crowd.

I don’t think it’s a good thing that it happens, since it slows down musical progression. But, it is good to know that it does happen.

Wise words! I’ve seen this happen many times.

If you’re playing what they want and it’s not what you want to play or are good at playing, then you’re selling out. Have some pride lol

Um… no

Yes. It may be the ‘right’ thing to do in certain instances (well, you want to get paid don’t you?) but then it’s just a ‘job’ because you’re not enjoying it and it’s not what you’re about.

The reason I left after an hour was to keep my pride. There are certain things I don’t spin, they were demanding it. They wanted me to spin wakka wakka by shakira…

I wasn’t aiming that at you, I can sympathise with you, I just meant in general, there are many ‘DJs’ that do this.

It will never be “just a job”, but it will always be a job. And for the ones who make it that far that they can call it a job, it’s the best job in the world. But you can’t always play just what you like.

It’s about doing a job well… your job is to get the majority of the people dancing…

I have issue with the term “selling out” especially coming from someone asking advice about their first gig is all

Fair enough. I did specifically state ‘certain instances’

The certain instances are very limiting. Imho there are certain instances where you should be allowed not to play music the crowd wants. I draw my line at dancehall/reggeaton, I will never play it. Good thing is, I will never have to play it, because I’ll pick the gigs where people hate it just as much as I do.

No worries, it’s just over the years you find your self in all sorts of odd gigs. I like a lot of different music so personally I can normally find something to play that I like and the crowd likes.

Good music is good music imo whether it’s underground or chart.

NB I’d wouldn’t play Shakira Wakka Waakka but i probably would play She Wolf instead and mix it in with Daft Punk - around the world.

That’s how i’d handle that situation anyway

Nice one Max, obviously you have some more experience
Too bad this wouldn’t have worked on them, they wanted to do some special wakka wakka dance. As soon as I packed my stuff the song was played, so they had their fun :stuck_out_tongue:

I get to make parties rock for a living. I play a lot of music that I’m not really into (I prefer punk rock, myself), but on the other hand I only have to work 4-6 nights a month to pay my bills. I get at least 20 days a month to do exactly what I want (mostly playing punk rock!)

Creating and playing music is what I’ve always wanted to do with my life, and if dropping a few lousy pop songs means I get to live my dream so be it. I think people who work crappy jobs to support their DJ passions are the real sellouts.

P.S. I wouldn’t play wakka wakka, either.

I think Jake just made a new sig line for someone!

Do you guys think I should do 3 30 minute mixes?
1 drum n bass (and subgenres) only
1 trance (and subgenres) only
1 mixed including house dance dubstep dnb trance?

haha that’s hilarious. In absolute all honesty, I probably would have played their wakka wakka shit, I’m not too proud. Might even have filmed it and stuck it up youtube and posted it here…

Perhaps when you’ve played a few gigs that are wicked you can take these soul destroyers with a little pinch of salt.

douche bags are douche bags but I still prefer satisfied douche bags to unsatisfied douchbags any day

Fuck that Wakka Wakka track.

They played it to DEATH here during the World Cup.

And that Freshly Ground is naff too.

LOL

Anyone?

TBH i know that wakka wakka tune exists but i don’t think i’ve even heard it.

quickly goes on youtube

shit… that is absolute toilet. I watched the world cup but somehow managed to avoid that song too much. What a crock of shit.

Think i would draw the line at that as it goes…

i secretly like that she wolf track though… and shakira is hot no doubt
