LATENCY SETTINGS!!! what to DO???

hi really stuck on what to do with my latency settings..
have it currently set on 1024 with 4ms usb buffer and i have a max output of 32ms ??.. not 100% on what these actually do but have jumbled these settings around and this is what sounds best at the moment. but I still get the occasional audio dropouts.. using an s4 midi with dell laptop 3gb RAM 2.1ghz duo core and windows vista

if anyone could help me that would be great

Audio drop oputs could be due to other things.

When I set my latency too low I get crackles rater than drop outs.

Try disableing your wifi if you have it.

Also make sure your sample rate isn’t set higher than 44,100Hz. 32ms is a massive latency and you shouldn’t need to have it that high.

This is for Windows 7, but some of the stuff applies.

How are u running a 3gb ram laptop ? If it’s a 2gb and a 1gb then you might want to take got 1gb out because it actually divides the ram if you have an odd number. So you would technically have 1.5gb of ram in there. This will also help with dropouts, you also might want to try running to script thing on the blog.

huh? That is not true at all. I think what you are talking about is referring to single channel vs. dual channel memory access. It doesn’t split the RAM in half. AFAIK single channel memory access has negligible real world performance issues.

it would hurt to add an extra gigabyte though.

should I update my drivers? have downloaded the latest from dell but my computer wont let me let it run saying there is not enough allocated memory?

You should be using ASIO drivers, not the ones from Dell. That’ll be why your latency is so high.

ASIO all the way

awesome  where could i find them?

http://www.asio4all.com/ or google.

ok this is what i have done…

installed ASIO4ALL driver v2 and set it to win built in soundcard in the audio settings in traktor.. also downloaded and tried to use the script from the djtechtools site.. not sure if it works as i have vista and i get a few lines saying access denied when i set to optimise.

i have set the samples to 128 and buffer to 2ms, and the sample rate has stayed at 44100hz. i now have latency of 8.5ms .performed a diagnostic test and i get and avg latency of 1000 with a max of 1994 with these settings,

when running traktor my cpu usage seems to have dropped a little bit but get a large spike into the red occasionally and hear a crackle or dropout for a split second. i think things have improved a little bit but i am really fussy about the way its sounding at the moment. sorry to whine on about this but any feedback is much appreciated!

Pops and Crackles are OUT mate…no need to be sorry.

Its not playable like that…and I would not be satisfied.

What kind of USB cables you got? Everything running in the background turned off?

Vista is also just BS…so could be that!

Had you definitely turned off your wifi and I would also always disable your APCI battery manager in devices. Make sure you turn off antivirus too and adjust your visualisation settings to windows basic. This is 4 things I do EVERYTIME I use my S4 and I’ve never had sound issues.

You are use the soundcard in the S4 right? And not just plugging the speakers into the laptop…?

Why is everyone recommending the ASIO drivers over the official NI ones?

Disable your wifi card when you play. I had the same problem when I first started using Traktor.

using standard usb cables that came with the s4, wifi, antivirus turned off.. im guessing everything in the background is turned off also with the the script from djtechtools.. and yes vista IS BS!! and im not allowed to spend anymore money to get win 7 haha

yup speakers are running from the s4, i keep checking the NI service center for the latest drivers but nothing new
