Laws about underage performers in clubs?
Hey,
I’m just curious if anyone has any info on the laws about performing in a club if you’re underage.
Thanks, Misha

where are you from?
here in the US, you have to be at least 18 and even then most DJ’s don’t get hired in any sort of a club until your at least 21 unfortunately…
Right I should have mentioned that I live in Canada…
I’m still guessin you have to be 18 to work in a club unless…*cough under the table *COUGH! =) but that’s just a guess o.o
Martinez Bros. were DJing inside of clubs at the tender age of 15…
It probably depends on the manager. Worst comes to worst you’ll be drinking complimentary shirley temples all night.
It depends on the province, here in Ontario you have to be 18 to work at a licensed club. Its kind of weird, I’ve played in bars back when i was 17, but the cops in my area don’t really care anyways.
lucky bastard! ![]()
ill be 18 in 3 months ![]()
ill be 19 in three months
no legal issues then
a few years ago our drinking age was raised to 20 from18, also at this time they bought in photo id’s which were needed if you looked too young. i didn’t have a license at the time and had a lot of trouble getting served because i look 12. its back down to 18 now. i started drinking at 12 tho lol.
All depends on the establishment. I worked at a club in NYC that would let anyone we vouched for under 21, and I’ve worked at places where it didn’t matter who you are or what you wanted, if they were under 21 they weren’t getting in.
Unless the bouncer said you could.
Moral of the story, make friends with the bouncers.
i don’t think it’s much about the legal side of playing under age, it’s just not going in your favour if you are - as there are so many reasons promoters and owners have to fob off the thousands of DJs asking for gigs in some places - and that’s just another valid one. I’m sure if you convince anyone that you’re good enough (ie have chart topping production success on beatport..) they’d let you in, but there’s not muuch point in trying otherwise.
Id recommend (hugely) DJing at underage nights if there are any, or if not and you have enough time (and want it enough) to promote your own.. you can book big names, get yourself exposure, play at decent places, do it for charity, and start early. takes a lot of time and effort though, and you have to be popular./be able to pull a decent crowd.. just a thought! ![]()
